CHANGING GAME CONTROLS / USING HAND CONTROLLERS WINDOWS The map on the HELP page showing how Intellivision hand controllers are mapped to the computer keyboard is a default configuration that can be modified to suit your preferences. You can also map the Intellivision hand controllers to DirectX-compatible controllers and joysticks. You must install your DirectX-compatible controllers and any drivers before attempting to use them with INTELLIVISION GREATEST HITS. Please refer to the controller manufacturer's directions. You must also have DirectX (v. 7.0 or higher) installed on your system in order to properly configure and use controllers. If you do not have DirectX installed on your computer, you can download a current version from the Microsoft web site at: www.microsoft.com/directx Once you have installed your controller(s) and you have verified that you have DirectX installed, you are ready to use them with INTELLIVISION GREATEST HITS. While a game is playing, hit F1 to pause. Under the Options pulldown menu, select Controllers (Left or Right). The GAME PLAYER defaults to the keyboard mapping, so if you want to use a controller instead, put a check mark in the box labeled "Use Joystick." You should note that your configuration will be saved for only the particular game you had running when you brought up the controller settings menu. The settings will be reset when you close the game. If you wish to save the settings for each future instance of the game, click the Save as Default button. Once the box is checked, a dropdown list will appear to the right which will list the controller(s) you have installed on your computer. If you only have once controller installed, it should automatically be selected. If you have more than one controller installed, you'll need to use the down arrow key to move the selection down to the controller you wish to use. Once you've selected your controller, you can map the Intellivision controller functions to your controller. Select a button (Upper Action, for example) by clicking on it. Then press the button on your controller that you wish to map that function to and you should see the name of the button appear in the box next to the radio button labeled Main. Continue mapping the various functions in the same manner. You may not need to map all the numbers on the Intellivision controller number pad, as they keyboard will still function. The directional pad on your controller may automatically work without mapping. Once you are done mapping the controls, click on the close button to exit the controller configuration menu. To use two controllers you should note that Microsoft suggests using the same brand and type of controllers with DirectX. Trying to use two different controllers may not work. To configure the second controller, choose the right or left (whichever you did not previously configure) from the Options/Controller menu. Configure this one as you did the first controller. MAC The map on the HELP page showing how Intellivision hand controllers are mapped to the computer keyboard is a default configuration. Other configurations are available for the left and right hand controllers under the OPTIONS menu of the INTELLIVISION GAME PLAYER. INTELLIVISION GREATEST HITS does not directly support hand controllers (there is no integrated HID or InputSprocket support). However, we have found that many game work well using the shareware software USB Overdrive. USB Overdrive is a universal USB driver that lets you use any joystick or gamepad with any game, including those that don't support Apple's InputSprocket. You can download USB Overdrive at www.usboverdrive.com. ------------------------------- 7. SAVE/RECALL A GAME To save the game you are playing, select Save Game from the FILE menu of the INTELLIVISION GAME PLAYER. A dialog box will open. Browse to the folder on your hard drive or backup disk where you want to save your game. Give the saved game a name and click Save. You can save any number of games-in-progress by giving each a unique name. RECALL A SAVED GAME To recall a saved game, select Load Saved Game from under the FILE menu of the INTELLIVISION GAME PLAYER. A dialog box opens. Browse to where you saved the game. Highlight the name of the saved game and click Open. Your saved game will start from where you left off playing. --------- 8. TROUBLE PLAYING A GAME * (Windows) If games don't respond to keyboard presses, make sure you have the current version of DirectX installed on your computer. You can get DirectX free from the Microsoft web site (www.microsoft.com). * If you have trouble starting or playing a game, make sure you read the instructions carefully. Games are not consistent as to how the controls are used. * If games are running slowly, shut down all other programs before running Intellivision GREATEST HITS. * Try running games in a smaller window (see GAME PLAYER Options). ------------------------------- 9. KNOWN ISSUES The Intellivision console had a built-in screen saver feature that would time out a game after a few minutes if there were no key presses, displaying a black screen. This feature is reproduced in INTELLIVISION GREATEST HITS. If you leave a game running on your PC and Mac for a few minutes without playing, the monitor will go black. To restore the screen, you need to press one of the mapped hand controller buttons or discs. Try ENTER or the SPACE BAR. (Moving or clicking the mouse will not restore the screen.) If you have more than one controller installed on your Windows computer, it may be difficult to see the other controller(s) listed in the drop down list on the controller layout window. The drop down list will display your currently selected controller. The arrow buttons on the drop down list are unusually small but are functional. Alternately, you can use the down arrow key on your computer keyboard to scroll down to your desired selection. ------------------------------- 10.
