Ê version 1.0 Congratulations on your purchase of DavidsonÕs Ultimate Speed Reader ! We have included this ReadMe file to provide you with up-to-the-minute information about the program. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ********************************************* 68040 processor or Power Macintosh 8 MB RAM System 7.1 or higher Double-speed CD-ROM 640x480 resolution, 256 colors INSTALLING AND RUNNING THE PROGRAM ******************************************************** In order to run the program, you will first need to run the installer to setup the necessary program files on your hard drive. Double-click the ÒUltimate Speed Reader InstallerÓ icon on the CD to install these files. To run the program, insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive and double-click the ÒUltimate Speed ReaderÓ icon on the CD. SYSTEM PERFORMANCE TIPS ************************************* Memory on PowerPC systems: For PowerPC systems with 12 MB of available built-in memory, Virtual Memory should be turned ON when using the program. To do this, go to the Apple menu and choose Memory from the Control Panels menu. Locate ÒAvailable built-in memory,Ó directly above this is ÒAvailable on diskÓ. There needs to be sufficient disk space to use Virtual Memory. Directly below the ÒAvailable built-in memoryÓ is a box indicating the current Virtual Memory setting. Adjust the number to be one larger or more, but not exceeding two times the Available built-in memory. Turn Virtual Memory ON and restart the system. This will likely be a necessity even after turning off unneeded extensions (to free up memory) due to the sizes of Mac OS 7.x and DavidsonÕs Ultimate Speed Reader. If you have any questions concerning the use of Virtual Memory please consult the system manual, or the Apple Guide Topic on Memory. **Note: In the Get Info window on a Power Mac, there is a note added for any application that is optimized for the Power Mac. If Virtual Memory (or VM) is ON this note will show how much more memory the program will need. If VM is OFF, it will show how much less memory the program will use if VM is turned ON. If your machine has 16 MB of RAM with 8 MB or more free, the program may perform better if Virtual Memory is turned off. The Modern Memory Manager in the Memory control panel should also be turned ON regardless of available memory. **Note: The Modern Memory Manager is always on with system 7.6 and up, and therefore not selectable. EXTENSIONS AND CONTROL PANELS ************************************************ ¥ Optimize the programÕs performance by selecting Extensions Manager (or another third-party extensions manager, such as Conflict Catcher or Startup Manager) from Control Panels under the Apple menu. Uncheck any Extensions or Control Panels that are unnecessary for basic operation of the computer and CD-ROM drive. ¥ If an extensions manager cannot be found, place the unnecessary extensions in a folder called ÒExtensions (disabled)Ó and the Control Panels in a folder called ÒControl Panels (disabled),Ó then restart the computer. ¥ If you have any questions about which files are necessary, please consult the manual that came with your computer. GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS ********************************************** I. If the program seems to be running slowly: ¥ Close any unneccesary applications that may be running. ¥ If your computer, has 16 MB or more RAM of memory, try turning Virtual Memory off. II. Screensavers If you are running a screensaver in the background and experience video and sound problems during the game, disable the screen saver and the problem should be solved. Refer to your user documentation on how to disable the screen saver.
