==================================================== QuickCam Read Me Release 2.1.2 ==================================================== This Read Me has the following sections: USB Info Known Problems Other Things You Should Know Grayscale & Color QuickCam Serial Port Info ---------------------------------------------------- USB Info ---------------------------------------------------- * Multiple QuickCam VC's. Yes, you can plug in multiple QuickCam VC's, but to do so you will need a powered hub. The QuickCam VC is a high powered device and thus needs a powered hub. * Using a USB PCI Card? The QuickCam VC works fine with USB PCI cards however, for them to be accessible by your Mac you will need USB software. These MAY come with the PCI card, but if they don't you will need to get them from Apple (www.apple.com). * iMac Users! The QuickCam VC can be plugged into any USB port on the iMac including the free USB port on the keyboard, however, only one QuickCam can be plugged into the keyboard. The iMac keyboard is essentially a non-powered hub and can only support one high-powered device such as a QuickCam VC. * Hot plugging QuickCam VCs. If you plug in additional QuickCams while QuickPICT or QuickMovie is open, they won't be recognized until you quit and relaunch the apps. ---------------------------------------------------- Known Issues ---------------------------------------------------- * If you are using the QuickCam with an Apple designed TV tuner card (for example, in the Quadra 630 or PowerMac 5200/6200), you should use version 1.3.2 or later of the Apple Video Software. This is available at www.apple.com. * QuickPICT and QuickMovie will work with other video digitizers. However, some digitizers do not support recording into memory other than screen memory. QuickPICT will not work with these digitizers. QuickMovie will work, but the color depth of any movies recorded with these digitizers will be the same as your monitor depth. The following digitizers do not support off-screen digitization: 660/840AV - if the monitor depth is in thousands or higher 7500/8500 - if Virtual Memory or Connectix RAM Doubler are active 7100/8100AV - if the monitor depth is set to millions ---------------------------------------------------- Other Things You Should Know ---------------------------------------------------- * QuickTime is required for the QuickCam to operate. The latest version is available at http://www.apple.com/quicktime. * When you are actually recording a movie, your on-screen frame rate will appear to drop. Do not worry. This is because QuickTime and QuickMovie are making sure that you get the full rate saved to disk first; screen updates are secondary to captured frame rates. When you play back your saved movie, you will see the full frame rate captured by QuickMovie. * To get the fastest possible frame rate, make sure that your monitor depth is set to the depth of the movie being captured. (Preferably thousands.) * QuickPICT and QuickMovie will not capture pictures if they are in the background AND the entire video area is hidden. However, if you are using the "Auto-Capture" feature, QuickPICT will grab frames at the appropriate times. In addition, QuickMovie will not grab pictures and will stop recording when the video area is completely hidden. ---------------------------------------------------- Grayscale & Color QuickCam Serial Port Info ---------------------------------------------------- ** The following does not apply to the QuickCam VC because the VC plugs into the Mac USB port. ** * If you use AppleTalk on the Printer Port, but you are not currently connected to an LocalTalk device, AppleTalk needs to be inactive in order to make the Printer port available for QuickCam to use. The same applies if your QuickCam is installed on a PowerBook with one serial port and the modem is set to "compatible." The most common situations are as follows: 1. The QuickCam is connected to the modem port. It doesn't matter whether AppleTalk is on or off. 2. The QuickCam is connected to the Printer Port and LocalTalk is set to use the Printer port as well. In this case, you must disable AppleTalk. 3. The QuickCam is connected to the Printer Port and AppleTalk is set to use Ethernet. In this case, AppleTalk can remain enabled; it does not use the Printer Port. 4. You are using the QuickCam and AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA). In this case, you must select "Remote Only" in the Network control panel (or the AppleTalk control panel, if you are using Open Transport).
