New Printers Supported StyleScript 3.6 introduces support for four new inkjet printers: the Canon BJC 4550, and Apple's Color StyleWriter 4100, Color StyleWriter 4500, and Color StyleWriter 6500. StyleScript 3.6 supports both serial and LocalTalk printing to these three StyleWriters, and serial printing only to the Canon BJC 4550. AppleTalk / EtherTalk Support StyleScript's network printer drivers support network printing via 3 different connection methods, depending on the model of printer being used: 1) Apple's StyleWriter Ethertalk Adapter; 2) Apple's StyleWriter Localtalk Module; 3) built-in LocalTalk connections. StyleScript is compatible with Apple's Color StyleWriter LocalTalk Module, when used with: StyleWriter II, 1200, 1500, 2200, 2400 and 2500 StyleScript is compatible with Apple's StyleWriter EtherTalk Adapter, when used with: StyleWriter II, 1200, 1500, 2200, 2400 and 2500 StyleScript is LocalTalk network compatible with the built-in LocalTalk connections that exist in the 4100, 4500, and 6500 model StyleWriters, and in all of the Hewlett Packard Deskwriters which are supported by StyleScript (LocalTalk only - EtherTalk connectivity is not supported by StyleScript with any of these printers). Users must ensure that they are using standard phone net connectors and LocalTalk cabling, and not serial cables, when connecting with the network StyleScript drivers for these printers. StyleScript is not network compatible with the Epson Stylus Color 500, or the Canon BJC 4550. StyleScript does not support the software printer-sharing options that are employed by Apple StyleWriters and the Canon BJC 4550. NOTE: Apple officially supports printing to only the StyleWriter 2400 and the 2500 with the Color StyleWriter LocalTalk Module, and only supports printing to the StyleWriter 1200, 1500, 2200, 2400, and 2500 with the StyleWriter EtherTalk Adapter. StyleScript, however, was developed to be compatible with all StyleWriters but the original StyleWriter and the StyleWriter Pro, when used with the currently shipping models of either the Color StyleWriter LocalTalk Module or the StyleWriter EtherTalk Adapter, or via the built in Localtalk connections of the new 4100, 4500 and 6500 series StyleWriters. Apple Color StyleWriter Photograde Support StyleScript supports Photograde printing with the Apple Color StyleWriter 2500, using Apple's special Photograde ink cartridges and paper. Unfortunately, StyleScript does not support printing with Photograph quality ink, on the 4500 or 6500 model Apple Color StyleWriters. Using Canon BJC 4550 Photograph Quality Ink and Canon Hi-Res Paper Canon BJC 4550 photograph quality ink cartridge and Canon Hi-Res Paper must be used exclusively in conjuction with each other. If you print on Hi-Res Paper without the photograph quality ink cartridge installed, or if you use the photograph quality ink cartridge with anything other than Hi-Res paper, your output will not be correct. Problems that can result from this mismatching of ink and paper include the stretching, compressing or smearing of a document. For Hewlett Packard Printer Owners: Changes to Landscape Rotation Previous versions of StyleScript for Hewlett Packard printers (version 3.0.2 and earlier) rotated a document in a counter-clockwise direction, if Landscape orientation was selected in StyleScript's Page Setup dialog. This differed from the way in which Hewlett-Packard printer drivers rotated a document, which was in a clockwise direction. This often caused noticeable clipping problems, if using StyleScript to print a Landscape orientation document that was originally created with a Hewlett Packard printer driver (ie. a document created while a Hewlett Packard driver is selected in the Chooser). StyleScript's drivers for Hewlett Packard printers now rotates a document in a clockwise direction, when printing in Landscape orientation -- just as Hewlett Packard's printer drivers do. This should resolve many of the Landscape clipping problems encountered previously, and will make it easier for a user to switch back and forth between StyleScript and a Hewlett Packard printer driver -- without having to layout a Landscaped document every time, in order to avoid clipping. Any Landscape-orientation documents created with a previous version of StyleScript (for Hewlett Packard printers only) may need to be laid out again with StyleScript, and re-saved. For more detailed information on how to avoid clipping, please refer to "StyleScript vs. Epson / Hewlett Packard Margins and Maximum Printable Areas: How to Avoid Clipping", in the "Other Problems" section of this ReadMe. StyleScript Tech Info 1.0 database Our Customer Service department at Infowave has designed a very helpful resource for StyleScript users -- the StyleScript Tech Info database. This self-help database is intended to offer StyleScript Users a wealth of troubleshooting steps, technical advice, application notes, tips and tricks, and answers to frequently asked questions. If you have any questions that you can't find the answers to in the StyleScript users manual, or in this ReadMe, please check out the contents of the Tech Info database. Users can access this database by double clicking the StyleScript Tech Info 1.0 alias, that is installed in StyleScript folder at the root level of the hard drive, or by simply double clicking the StyleScript Tech Info 1.0 icon on the CD itself. General Questions What is PostScript? PostScript is a printer and resolution-independent image-description language. This means that Encapsulated PostScript Images (EPS) are scalable and portable between printers of different resolutions. An EPS file will always print at the highest quality available on the printer being used. To take advantage of the portability and scalability of EPS images you require two things: 1. Applications that will create EPS images, such as Adobe Illustrator, MacroMedia Freehand or Adobe PageMaker. 2. A printer with an interpreter that will convert the PostScript file into the printer's specific commands. StyleScript is an Adobe PostScript Level 2 interpreter for Apple's StyleWriters, Hewlett-Packards DeskWriters and the Epson Stylus Color 500.. StyleScript vs. Apple's StyleWriter, HP's DeskWriter, Epson, and Canon Drivers StyleScript only improves the output quality of EPS images printed from PostScript applications. Most Macintosh applications print QuickDraw images. We recommend that you use the standard Macintosh printer driver for your printer to print from any program that does not output PostScript graphics. Some applications read EPS files but convert them to lower resolution QuickDraw images. The output quality will not improve if you print them using StyleScript. StyleScript Supported Printers StyleScript currently supports many Apple StyleWriter, Hewlett Packard DeskWriter/DeskJet, Canon and Epson inkjet printers. Supported printers include: Apple's StyleWriter Pro, StyleWriter II and the StyleWriter 1200, 1500, 2200, 2400, 2500, 4100, 4500 and 6500 Hewlett Packard's DeskWriter 550C, 600, 660C and 680C, DeskJet 850C, 855C and 870C Epson's Stylus Color 500 Canon BJC 4550 Supported Output Resolutions StyleScript supports the following maximum output resolutions (horizontal x vertical) for the various printers: StyleWriter 2500: 720x360 dpi. StyleWriter 4100/4500: 600x600 dpi black and white, 600x300 dpi color on transparency/glossy paper, 300x300 dpi color on plain paper. StyleWriter 6500: 600x600 dpi black and white, 300x300 dpi color All Other StyleWriters: 360x360 dpi. HP DeskWriter 550C: 300x300 dpi. HP DeskJet 850C/855C: 600x600 dpi black and white, 300x300 dpi color HP DeskJet 870C: 600x600 dpi black and white, 600x300 dpi color HP DeskWriter 600/660C/680C: 600x600 dpi black and white, 600x300 dpi color on transparency/glossy paper, 300x300 dpi color on plain paper. Epson Stylus Color 500: 720x720 dpi. Canon BJC 4550: 720X360 dpi. All users: Please refer to the documentation that came with your printer, for information regarding media types and high resolution printing. Many printer manufacturers only support the maximum resolutions of the printer models above when used with special high resolution paper. StyleScript Speed PostScript printing requires many time-consuming calculations. Most PostScript printers execute these calculations in hardware. StyleScript executes these calculations in software, which is slower than in hardware. The faster your Mac is, the faster StyleScript will print from your Mac. StyleScript is accelerated for Power Macintoshes. PowerMac users should see improved performance and a decrease in print time. Apple's Desktop Printing Extension Apple's Desktop Printing extension has been designed to work specifically with Apple's own printer drivers. It is not compatible with third-party printer drivers such as StyleScript, and therefore will not work properly when using StyleScript. Please disable the Desktop Printing extension (using the Extensions Manager Control Panel), when printing with StyleScript, in order to use Apple's standard PrintMonitor. StyleScript and QuickDraw GX StyleScript does not support QuickDraw GX. Installation Notes IMPORTANT NOTE: When installing StyleScript 3.6, the StyleScript installer will automatically remove any previously installed StyleScript drivers/files, prior to installation. Listed below are the locations of the StyleScript files, after installation: 1. Extensions Folder StyleScript printer driver StyleScript Server StyleScript Folder StyleScript Init 2. Printer Description Folder (in Extensions Folder) StyleScript II/Pro/1200/1500/2200/2400/2500/4100/4500/6500 V2013.114 II(AT)/1200(AT)/1500(AT)/2200(AT)/2400(AT)/2500(AT)/4100(AT)/4500(AT)/6500(AT) V2013.114 StyleScript 550C/600/660C/850C/680C/870C V2013.114 550C(AT)/600(AT)/660C(AT)/850C(AT)/680C(AT)/870C(AT) V2013.114 StyleScript E500 V2013.114 StyleScript 4550 V2013.114 3. Preferences Folder (the items below are not installed, but are created the first time StyleScript is used) StyleScript printer driver prefs StyleScript Server prefs StyleScript Installer prefs PLEASE NOTE: If you use the StyleScript installer's Remove feature, it will not remove any copy-protection authorizations that were installed as part of StyleScript v 2.0 or earlier. If you are upgrading from version 2.0 or earlier of StyleScript, please use the Remove feature in the older v 1.x or 2.x StyleScript installer, in order to remove these copy-protection files. Macintosh IIfx, Quadra 900 and 950 Users These computers exhibit a problem with the serial ports that could cause StyleScript to hang or crash. This problem can be resolved with Apple's Serial Switch. During installation of StyleScript, the Installer checks what sort of Macintosh you have, and if it requires the Serial Switch. If you have one of the above listed Macintoshes, the installer will automatically place the Serial Switch in your Control Panels folder. The Serial Switch is installed ONLY if required. After installation, open the Serial Switch Control Panel and set it to "Compatible" mode. System 7.5 or Higher The "Assistant Toolbox" extension installed with System 7.5 or higher affects printing to PostScript devices. To function correctly, StyleScript requires that this extension be removed. The StyleScript Installer will run a check for the Assistant Toolbox extension during installation. If the Assistant Toolbox extension is present and enabled, the StyleScript Installer will remove it and place it in an "Items Removed by StyleScript" folder located at the root level of your hard drive. Installing more than one StyleScript driver on the same Mac As part of our PostScript licensing agreement, you cannot have more than one StyleScript driver installed on the same Mac at the same time. When installing StyleScript, all previously installed StyleScript files are removed -- installing a second StyleScript driver will automatically replace the previously installed StyleScript driver. StyleScript Folder For your convenience, the StyleScript Folder is automatically installed with your selected StyleScript package. This folder is located at the top level of your hard drive. The StyleScript Folder contains the following items: Quark PDF Files The Quark PDF Files are included for use with Quark Xpress version 3.3.1 or later. The appropriate Quark PDF File for your StyleWriter printer is automatically installed in the "For Quark Xpress users" Folder. This file MUST be installed in order for Quark to work correctly with StyleScript. To install the StyleScript PDF file, drag the file into the PDF Folder in your Quark XPress folder on your computer. Don't forget to set the Printer Type to "StyleScript" in the Page Setup dialog before printing. Print PostScript application Print PostScript is a utility developed to assist you in printing PostScript files. When you print using StyleScript or other PostScript drivers (such as the LaserWriter 8) you have an option to print to a PostScript (.ps) file instead of directly to the printer. The Print PostScript application allows you to print any PostScript (.ps) files you have created. To print a (.ps) PostScript file: 1. Run the Print PostScript application. 2. Select the "Print PostScript" command from the File menu. 3. From the Open File dialog box select the .ps file you wish to print. 4. After making your selection, click the Open button to begin printing. Read Me File The StyleScript Read Me file is included in the StyleScript Folder for your convenience. The Read Me file contains the most up-to-date information and we recommend that you keep it handy for reference or information that the manual may not contain. StyleScript Tech Info 1.0 alias This is an alias to the StyleScript Tech Info 1.0 database, which is included on your StyleScript installation CD. Double clicking this alias will prompt you to insert your StyleScript installation CD into your computer. StyleScript Server Memory Allocation Notes This section explains the function of the "Reserve more memory for jobs" and the "Extra memory for raster buffer" settings, in the StyleScript Server's Preferences dialog. This information is an amendment to the StyleScript manual. Please follow the instructions below, rather than those in the "Optimizing Memory Allocation" section in the appendix of your StyleScript user's manual. Reserve More Memory for jobs You may wish to allocate more memory to the StyleScript Server's "Reserve More Memory for Jobs" setting, if you have been experiencing: ¥ -108 (Out of Memory) errors ¥ LimitCheck, RangeCheck or ShowPage errors ¥ difficulties printing very large or complex documents. Follow the instructions below to optimize the StyleScript Server, if you are encountering the low memory conditions listed above: 1. Start with no applications running. 2. Double-click on the StyleScript Server icon. 3. Select Preferences from the File Menu. 4. Enter a value in the "Reserve more memory for jobs" field. We recommend 1,000k to 2,000k to start. 5. Click OK. 6. Quit the StyleScript Server. Unlike previous versions of StyleScript, StyleScript 3.6 users do NOT need to also change the memory allocation in the StyleScript Server's "Get Info" box -- this change is now done automatically with StyleScript 3.6. Changes to the StyleScript Server's memory allocation will not take effect until the StyleScript Server is restarted. Extra memory to raster buffer If your printer pauses mid-page for long periods of time (ie. longer than 15 or 20 seconds), when printing large or complex print jobs, you may wish to allocate more memory to the StyleScript Server's "Extra memory for raster buffer" setting. Allocating more memory to the Raster Buffer will allow StyleScript to process very large and complex print jobs with fewer or no printer pauses. Because long printer pauses in the middle of a page can cause ink to dry unevenly, and thus not blend well, adding more memory to this setting can eliminate such output problems. Most users will never encounter this sort of problem, and in most cases can leave this setting at zero k. Users should only add more memory to this setting if they encounter the above-described printer pauses. NOTE: Because of the type of print engine they use, the DeskWriter 660C and 680C printers often pauses mid-page while printing. Allocating more memory to StyleScript's Raster Buffer will not eliminate printer pauses with the DeskWriter 660C and 680C. Follow the instructions below to allocate extra memory to StyleScript's raster buffer, and speed up print-processing: 1. Start with no applications running. 2. Double-click on the StyleScript Server icon. 3. Select Preferences from the File Menu. 4. Enter a value in the "Extra memory for raster buffer" field. We recommend 1,000k to 2,000k to start. 5. Click OK. 6. Quit the StyleScript Server. Changes to the StyleScript Server's memory allocation will not take effect until the StyleScript Server is restarted. NOTE: Entering a number in either the "Reserve more memory for jobs" field or the "Extra memory for raster buffer" field will automatically increase both the Minimum and Preferred memory sizes in the "Get Info" window of the StyleScript Server by the same amount. Because the Finder stores some of this "Get Info" information in cache, this memory change may not be reflected immediately in the "Get Info" window for the StyleScript Server -- even though this memory adjustment has been successfully completed. General Memory Allocation Tips You cannot change an application's memory allocation while the application is running. Ensure that you are not allocating more memory than your computer has. For example, if your Mac has 12Mb of RAM and your System Software uses 3Mb of RAM, you have approximately 9Mb of free RAM. If the StyleScript Server is running at 5Mb , this now leaves less than 4Mb of free RAM. **The more memory you allocate to applications, etc. leaves less free RAM in your Mac for use with StyleScript.** We recommend that you allocate at least 8,000K to the PostScript application you are printing from (or more, if your application's minimum memory requirements exceed 8,000k). Most applications will run faster and more smoothly by adding more memory. For a recommendation on the best memory allocation for a particular application, contact the application manufacturer. Other Issues "StyleScript INIT not installed properly" message There are a few different circumstances under which the message "The StyleScript INIT is not installed properly" will appear when printing, prompting to you to cancel the print job. These circumstances are: 1) If the StyleScript INIT has been damaged, moved or deleted. If this error message appears, check your Extensions Folder (in your System Folder) to see if the StyleScript INIT is there. If it is not there, then reinstall StyleScript from the StyleScript CD. If the StyleScript INIT is in the Extensions Folder, follow the steps in 2) below. 2) If the Sharing Setup Control Panel has not been filled in properly. If the Sharing Setup Control panel does not have any information entered in the "User Name" and "Macintosh Name" fields, this "StyleScript INIT not installed properly" message will appear when printing -- even if the StyleScript INIT is installed properly in the Extensions Folder. Make sure these fields are filled in, restart the Macintosh, and try printing from StyleScript again. If the same message appears, then reinstall StyleScript from the StyleScript CD. Problems Printing in Scatter Dither with Quark XPress -- A Quark Xpress Solution NOTE: QuarkXPress version 4.0 does not require the "Quark PS Utilities 1.2" XTension, described below, in order to print in Scatter mode properly. QuarkXpress 4.0 users should NOT install this XTension. Quark Xpress has released a new Quark XTension, called "Quark PS Utilities 1.2". Among other features, this XTension now allows StyleScript Users to print in Scatter dither mode from Quark Xpress. The Quark PS Utilities 1.2 XTension can be obtained from Quark Xpress' web site, at http://www.quark.com. Once the PS Utilities XTension is installed in your Quark Xpress XTension folder, a new "PS Utilities" menu item will be added to Quark's menu bar. From the PS Utilities menu, select the "PostScript Screening" option. In the "Printer Type" area of the PostScript Screening window, select the StyleScript PDF file you should already have installed in your Quark Xpress folder (see the notes on Quark PDF Files, in the StyleScript Folder section above). In the 13 pop-up menus at the bottom of the PostScript Screening window, set all 13 pop-ups to "Printer." Then click Save. The setup above only needs to be done once, unless StyleScript is reinstalled or a new version of StyleScript is installed. StyleScript Icons Do Not Appear in the Chooser If the StyleScript icons do not appear in the Chooser it is likely that you have QuickDraw GX installed in your system. QuickDraw GX requires new GX compatible drivers and will not recognize the StyleScript Chooser extensions. To print using StyleScript you must first disable the QuickDraw GX extension by either turning it off with your Extensions Manager or removing it from your Extensions folder. Once the QuickDraw GX extension has been disabled you should restart your Macintosh before running StyleScript. Disk Utility Reports a Problem with the StyleScript Preferences File Some disk utilities report an incorrect physical length or B-tree problem with the StyleScript Preferences file. While this is true, it is not a problem and will not interfere with your disk operations. You can safely ignore any reports of this nature. Trashing the StyleScript Server and StyleScript driver Preferences will resolve the problem -- these deleted preference files will automatically be re-created by StyleScript the next time you select the StyleScript driver in the Chooser. StyleScript Fonts and the FindFont Error The StyleScript package installs some Adobe Basic Fonts (Courier, Times, Symbol, Helvetica). If you do not have these fonts installed or have removed them for some reason, you may see a FindFont error when trying to print a document using StyleScript. These Adobe fonts MUST be properly installed in the Fonts Folder in order for StyleScript to work correctly. To install these fonts, follow the steps below: 1. Restart your computer with all but your System Extensions disabled, using the Extensions Manager Control Panel. 2. Insert StyleScript CD. 3. Double-click the Installer to launch it. 4. When installation window appears, locate and select "StyleScript's PostScript Reference Fonts". 5. Click Install. StyleScript should work correctly after the installation is complete. StyleScript, Multiple Master Fonts and the FindFont Error StyleScript has problems printing some newer Adobe Multiple Master fonts, such as Adobe Jenson MM. To solve this problem: 1) Create a PostScript file of your document using the PSPrinter driver supplied with the Multiple Master fonts 2) Reselect the StyleScript printer driver in the Chooser 3) Use the Print PostScript utility to print the .ps file create using the PSprinter driver. LocalTalk Notes for DeskWriter/DeskJet and StyleWriter 4100/4500/6500 users If LocalTalk communication fails during a job and cannot be re-established the StyleScript LocalTalk drivers for the DeskWriter, DeskJet and StyleWriter 4100/4500/6500 printers can cause your system to freeze. There are two situations where this can occur. 1) If you select an AT (LocalTalk) StyleScript driver and AppleTalk is set to inactive, the Chooser may freeze as it cannot access the network to find your printer. To avoid this problem, make sure AppleTalk is set to "Active" in the Chooser before you select the driver. 2) If you turn off your printer while you are printing with a LocalTalk driver, the StyleScript Server will continue to try and send the print job to the printer over the network. To avoid this problem, do not turn off your printer while you are printing. If your system does freeze in either of these situations, you will need to restart your Macintosh to clear the problem. Printing from Deneba Canvas 5 There is a problem when using Deneba Canvas v5.0 with StyleScript -- the Print Quality, Media Types, and Inks pop-up menus in the Print dialog are not accessible. This problem has been addressed with Canvas 5.0.1. Canvas 5.0 users who are encountering this problem should contact Deneba for information on obtaining an upgrade. Printing From Adobe Illustrator Always make sure to select the "Use Printer's Default Screens" options, in Illustrator's Document Setup dialog -- this will ensure that StyleScript's screens will be used, rather than Illustrator's. This will correct any problems you may encounter when this option is not selected, such as coarse halftone screens and the inability to print in Scatter dither. Printing in Black and White From WordPerfect 3.5 and 3.5.1 There is a problem when trying to print in black and white from WordPerfect 3.5 and 3.5.1, to color PostScript printers (including StyleScript). The problem is that WordPerfect will always print in color, even if the Print dialog specifies printing in black and white. WordPerfect 3.5 users need to upgrade to WordPerfect version 3.5.1 in order to work around this problem when using StyleScript. WordPerfect 3.5.1 users can successfully print documents in black and white with StyleScript by: - selecting the "Black only" option from the "Inks:" popup menu, in the StyleScript Print dialog - also selecting the "Black and White" option from the "Print:" popup menu, in the StyleScript Print Options dialog (accessible by clicking the "Options" button, in the StyleScript Print dialog) Just selecting one or the other option will not yield black and white printing -- both need to be selected. StyleScript vs. Epson / Hewlett Packard / Canon / Apple Margins and Maximum Printable Areas: How to Avoid Clipping StyleScript's maximum printable area margins -- that is, the closest that StyleScript will allow the printer to print to the edge of the page -- may differ slightly from those used in the printer manufacturer's own printer drivers. The result is that documents originally created with another printer driver (ie. a document created while a Hewlett Packard or Epson driver is selected in the Chooser) may shift to the top or side when printed with StyleScript. To overcome this problem, always make sure to access StyleScript's Page Setup dialog before printing any document that was originally created with a Hewlett Packard or Epson driver -- by doing so, StyleScript's own margins will be used, and the document will be adjusted accordingly. This should correct clipping problems in most cases. If shifting or clipping still persists, you may need to layout your document again. To ensure that your document fits within StyleScript's maximum printable area for a given paper size, select Page Setup from the File Menu. Click on the page with the letter "a" in it -- this gives you StyleScript's margin limits for the currently selected paper size and orientation. This information represents StyleScript's maximum printable area, and these margin limits do not increase or decrease when you adjust your document's margins in the application you are printing from; if the margins you have created for your document are smaller than the ones listed here, clipping will occur. To avoid clipping, always make sure your document margins are not smaller than StyleScript's margin limits. Printing Envelopes from QuarkXpress In order to print envelopes properly from QuarkXpress, without clipping, users must ensure that the document margins setup in QuarkXpress exactly match the margins of the envelope type that has been selected in the StyleScript Page Setup dialog. To do this, select Page Setup from the File Menu, and select the envelope type you wish to print on. Click on the page icon with the letter "a" in it -- this gives you StyleScript's margin limits for the currently selected envelope size and orientation. Make sure that the margins in your QuarkXpress document match these margins. © 1997 Infowave Wireless Messaging, Inc. All rights reserved.
