Service Source 3.0 Read Me February 2000 Welcome to Service Source 3.0 Welcome to version 3.0 of the main Service Source CD. With this new release we are migrating Service Source CD to a HTML-based platform. Service Source 3.0 has the following significant changes: ¥ Service Source 3.0 startup document is in HTML format. The file creator type is Internet Explorer 4.5, and we recommend using IE 4.5.1 as your default browser when using Service Source 3.0. For more information read "System Requirements" below. ¥ Service Source 3.0 startup file replicates Service Source Online. You now can use the same interface to access Service Source technical contentÑwhether you're referencing Service Source CD or going online for the very latest versions. Note: The Service Source 3.0 startup screen (home page) is nearly identical to the Troubleshoot and Repair page at http://service.info.apple.com/diagnosing.html. ¥ Four service manuals are now available in PDF and HTML formats. These HTML manuals are under construction and we would appreciate your feedback regarding their usability. You can access the HTML manuals by selecting "See an service manual" from the iMac, PowerBook, G3/G4, or Displays product pages. Note: Acrobat Reader and the PDFViewer Web browser plug-in are still required to open most service manuals and other technical documents (such as the Memory Guide) that are in PDF format on this CD, and also to open the obsolete and vintage PDF manuals archived on the Companion CD. Refer to "Installing and Using Acrobat 4.0" below for more information. ====================================================== Contents This Service Source 3.0 Read Me document covers the following topics: ¥ System Requirements - Recommended System ConfigurationÑMain CD - Recommended System ConfigurationÑCompanion CD - Minimum System Configuration ¥ Getting Started ¥ Configuring Internet Explorer ¥ Navigating and Using the CD - Navigating and Using the Startup/Home Page - Navigating and Using the Product Pages ¥ Searching the CD - Using the HTML CD Index - Using the Acrobat PDF Search Index ¥ Launching Databases on the CD ¥ Troubleshooting: Known Problems ¥ Overview of the AppleCare Service Source CD Package ------------------------------------------------------------------------ System Requirements Recommended System ConfigurationÑMain CD Recommended system requirements for running the Service Source 3.0 main CD: ¥ Macintosh computer with a PowerPC processor and 36 MB of RAM (minimum) ¥ Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.5.1 (included in the Helpful Software folder on the Service Source Companion CD) ¥ Mac OS 8.6.1 or later ¥ 4x-speed or faster CD-ROM drive ¥ QuickTime 4 (included on the main CD in the Required Software folder) ¥ Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 (included on the main CD) Meeting (or exceeding) these requirements ensures that you can use the Service Source 3.0 (HTML) startup document to access all content on the CD, open PDF and HTML documents, launch the FileMaker Runtime databases (such as the Service Parts Database), and view QuickTime movies and job aids. For information on configuring your system, refer to "Getting Started" below. Recommended System ConfigurationÑCompanion CD The recommended system requirements for running the Service Source companion CD are: ¥ Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.5.1 (included in the Helpful Software folder) ¥ Power Macintosh computer running Mac OS 8.6 or later For information about installing and searching the Tech Info Library (TIL) on CD, be sure to read the "TIL Read Me" document at the top level of the Companion CD. Using Netscape Navigator or Communicator 4.x You may run Service Source 3.0 CD using Netscape Navigator or Communicator 4.x, but doing so results in one significant limitationÑyou can not launch either the Service Parts Database or the Apple Spec Database directly from the Service Source startup document. Important: If you launch the Service Source startup document with Navigator and select the Parts Database, Navigator attempts to download the entire database to the local drive before launching the FileMaker Runtime and opening the database. To avoid this, adhere to the recommended system configuration (see above) or access the Service Parts Database and Apple Spec Database using the aliases provided at the top level of the CD. Minimum System Requirements The following minimum system requirements will enable you to run Service Source 3.0 CD, but you may not be able to use the HTML startup document to access optimally all content on the CD. The minimum system requirements are: ¥ Macintosh computer with a 68030 processor (minimum) and 32 MB of RAM (minimum) ¥ Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x (included on the Service Source Companion CD inside the Helpful Software folder) or Netscape Navigator or Communicator 4.x ¥ Mac OS 7.6.1 or later ¥ 4x-speed or faster CD-ROM drive ¥ QuickTime 3 or later (QuickTime 4 is included on the main CD in the Required Software folder) ¥ Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 or later (Note: Acrobat Reader 3.0 is not compatible with Mac OS 9. Acrobat Reader 4.0 is included on the main CD.) Note: Netscape Navigator 4.06 requires and 030 processor and Mac OS 7.6.1; Netscape Navigator 4.7 requires a PowerPC processor and Mac OS 7.6.1 or later; and Internet Explorer 4.5.1 requires a PowerPC processor and Mac OS 8.1 or later. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Getting Started 1. Make sure you are running the Service Source 3.0 CD on a system that meets the system requirements recommended above. The following applications should be installed on this system: ¥ Internet Explorer 4.5.1. If not installed, go to the Companion CD, open the "Helpful Software" folder, and launch the Explorer 4.5.1 disc image (Microsoft Internet 4.5.1.smi). Note: After installing Internet Explorer, you will also need to configure it to open Acrobat PDF documents. Refer to "Set Explorer Preferences" in the You Should Know table along the right side of the Service Source CD home/startup page. Important: The Internet Explorer 4.5.1 installer places an old version of the QuickTime plug-in inside the Internet Explorer 4.5 Plug-ins folder on your hard drive. If you have run the IE installer, make sure you then also run the QuickTime Installer, which will place the current QuickTime plug-in in the IE Plug-ins folder. ¥ QuickTime 4. The QuickTime Installer is on this CD in the Required Software folder. Launch the installer and follow the on-screen directions to install QuickTime 4. The QuickTime 4 Installer also places the latest QuickTime plug-in in your browser's Plug-ins folder. ¥ Acrobat Reader 4.0. Acrobat Reader 4.0 is included on this CD. To install Reader 4.0, launch the Acrobat Reader 4.0 Installer alias at the top level of the CD. For information about installing and configuring Acrobat Reader 4.0, read the "About Acrobat 4" document adjacent to the 4.0 Installer icon. Note: If you are using Mac OS 9, you must use Acrobat Reader 4.0. Earlier versions of Acrobat Reader are not compatible with Mac OS 9. 2. Launch the Service Source 3.0 startup document called "ssstartup.html." To launch the startup document, double-click it or drag it to your Web browser application icon. The startup document will open to the Service Source 3.0 CD home page. Note: The Service Source 3.0 CD home/startup page may look familiarÑit's a close replica of the Service Source Online "Troubleshoot and Repair" page at http://service.info.apple.com/authorized/repair/diagnosing.shtml. 3. Configure Internet Explorer 4.5.1 to work best with Service Source 3.0 CD (see "Setting Internet Explorer Preferences" below). For optimum performance, you will want Explorer to immediately open Acrobat PDF documents rather than download them to your hard drive. Plus, you may want to maximize the Explorer window, thereby enabling you to view more content without scrolling the window. Setting Internet Explorer Preferences See "Set Explorer Preferences" for complete instructions for setting preferences so that IE opens (rather than downloads) Acrobat PDF documents. This document is in the You Should Know table along the right side of the CD home/startup page. Setting IE Default Viewing Preferences The steps below maximize the IE viewing window. Deselect viewing options to suit your viewing preference. a. In Internet Explorer, select Preferences from the Edit menu. b. Select Browser Display from Web Browser. c. Minimize the button bar along the top of the IE window by selecting Button Bar Style: Text Only or Button Bar Style: Icon Only, whichever you prefer. d. Click the Show Favorites Bar box (deselect it). You probably won't need your favorite links when working on the CD. e. If you want to maximize your window from edge to edge, click the Show Explorer Bar box to deselect it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Navigating and Using the CD You can access all content on Service Source 3.0 CD from the startup document/home page, and from these six product pages: - iMac product page - PowerBook product page - G3/G4 product page - Displays product page - Older Products page - Software (and Troubleshooting) products page Navigating and Using the Startup/Home Page Navigation Table Located in the upper, right corner of this and every HTML page on the CD, the navigation table takes you directly to the most frequently accessed repair tools (such as the Service Manuals and Parts Database), and to important servicing information such as CompTIA Codes, REAs, and the Product Service Matrix. Note: The Navigation Table also links directly to the U.S. and Canada Service Programs Manuals indexes, and is your primary method of accessing information about Apple Service programs. You also use the Navigation Table: - to access an index to all content on the CD (CD Index) - to return to the startup/home page from another page on the CD (Home) - to send us feedback (Feedback) Select a Product The Select a Product area on the startup/home page takes you to the six product pagesÑiMac, PowerBook, G3/G4, Displays, Older Products, and Software. Select a Tool The Select a Tool area lists troubleshooting and repair, parts identification, and reference tools, many of which are not in the Navigation Table. Find Out What's New on Service Source CD Use the links provided under this heading to access the What's New file. In What's New you can read about all changes made to Service Source contentÑand especially to the product service manualsÑsince the previous release of the CD. Hot Issues This table provides links to all current hot technical issues (TIL articles posted as Hot Issues since the previous release of the CD) and to an archive of all Hot Issues. The Hot Issues table also appears on the product pages and provides links to Hot Issues for that product family only. Program News This table links to all U.S. and Canada program notices published since the previous CD. Note: For an archive of U.S. and Canada program notices, refer to the Companion CD. Schedule of Deliverables This table provides expected ship dates for upcoming releases of Service Source CD, the Macintosh Family Diagnostic Update CD, and the Service Price Pages. Quick Directory This table provides telephone numbers and/or e-mail links to the most commonly requested AppleCare contacts. This handy directory also appears on the product pages. Navigating and Using the Product Pages Access Service Manuals or Parts Lists At the center of each product page is a table that links: - to service manuals for the most recent Apple products in that family - to the Service Parts Database. Click "See an iMac service manual" to see the most recent iMac products and iMac service manuals. Do the same for the PowerBooks, G3/G4 Power Macintoshes, and Displays. Note: the service manual for one product in each family is currently available in PDF and in HTML format. Note: Please use both the HTML chapters and the PDF manuals when both are available, and send us your comments. The HTML manuals are currently under construction, and we welcome your feedback! We have provided a direct link to a brief questionnaire about the usability of the HTML manuals. This link requires an active Internet connection. Content Tables The right side of each product page includes tables of references to important technical content. Most of the references in these table are to TIL articles that our writers feel will be the most helpful to repair technicians. These articles have been downloaded from the online TIL just prior to publishing the CD and copied to the CD. Tables and Content That Require an Active Internet Connection Occasionally the best resources are on the Apple Support Web site. Software Updates is an example, as is the excellent AirPort site. When it doesn't make sense or is impossible to download content to CD, we have instead provided direct links to appropriate locations on the Web. Note: Links that require an active Internet connection are in red, or the references to these links (usually the words "Requires Internet Connection") are in red. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Searching the CD Using the HTML CD Index The titles of most documents on the Service Source 3.0 CD have been captured in an index that can be accessed from the Navigation Table in the upper right corner of every HTML page on the CD. From the startup/home page, click CD Index to access this handy guide to the contents of the CD. You can use the index to locate and to access the HTML or PDF documents, and to launch the Spec and Parts Databases. Using the Acrobat PDF Search Index As was true of previous releases of Service Source CD, all content within PDF documents on the CD has been indexed. At any time you can use Acrobat Reader to perform a text search of the content contained within PDF documents on the CD. To perform an index search of the PDF documents, launch Acrobat Reader separately or by accessing a PDF document on the CD. Then select the index search icon on the Acrobat tool bar. (The index search icon depicts binoculars on top of a document.) Alternatively, you can select Search/Indexes... from the Tools menu. The first time you perform an index search you will have to load the Service Source index (see below). Subsequently, the Service Source Index loads automatically and you can immediately enter your search string and perform the search. Loading the PDX Index To load the Service Source index you will have to navigate to the CD where the most recent index file is located, and select the file called "Service Source index.pdx." In the search indexes window: 1. Click Indexes... 2. Click Add, and navigate to the file called "Service Source index.pdx", which is located at the top/root level of the Service Source CD. 3. Double-click the file (or select the file and click Add) to add it to the list of available indexes. Click OK. You are now ready to enter a search string and perform a search. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Launching Databases on the CD You can access and launch the Service Parts Database and Apple Spec Database from several locations on the CD. Important: You should use Internet Explorer 4.5.1 to launch the Parts and Spec Databases from the HTML startup document/home file. If you are using Navigator, you will want to launch the databases from the top level of the CD only. See System Requirements/Using Netscape Navigator or Communicator 4.x above for more information. Top Level of the CD ¥ Aliases are provided at the top level of the CD to both databases. Double-clicking these aliases launches the FileMaker Runtime applications for the databases. Startup/Home Page ¥ Both databases are included in the Navigation Table in the upper, right corner of this and every HTML page. ¥ Both databases are available from the Select a Tool section of the page. The Service Parts Database is listed under Identify Parts, the Apple Spec Database is under Reference. Product Pages ¥ The Service Parts Database can be accessed from a table near the center of every product page. CD Index ¥ Links to both databases are included in the CD Index, which can be accessed from the Navigation Table. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Troubleshooting: Known Problems Problem with Netscape Navigator and Communicator Navigator and Communicator do not access the Service Parts and Spec Databases optimally for use on CD. If you use these Web browsers, you are advised not to access the databases from the Service Source 3.0 startup file. If you do so, Navigator/Communicator will download the entire database to disk before opening it, an operation that, in the case of the Service Parts Database, could take considerable time to complete. Problem with Internet Explorer 4.5.1 Installer The IE 4.5.1 installer places an old version of the QuickTime plug-in in the browser's Plug-ins folder. If you run this installer, be sure to also run the QuickTime Installer (included on this CD). Symptom: When you attempt to run a QuickTime movie, the movie will fail to play and you will see the QuickTime icon and an error message. Acrobat 3.0 and Mac OS 9 Are Not Compatible If you are running Mac OS 9, you must also install and use Acrobat Reader 4.0. The Acrobat Reader 4.0 Installer is included on this CD. Acrobat 4.0 Preferences Issue The default preferences in Acrobat Reader 4.0 will prevent you from opening more than one Acrobat document at a time. Refer to "About Acrobat 4" for instructions on changing this preference. Mac OS 9 and Adobe Type Manager Problem Mac OS 9 is incompatible with earlier versions of Adobe Type Manager (ATM), ATM Deluxe, and Adobe Type Reunion Deluxe. Adobe produced ATM 4.5.2, ATM Deluxe 4.5.2, and ATR Deluxe 2.5.2 to fix this problem. Read "About Acrobat 4" for more informaton. Problems With PDF Documents A version of the following message may appear on some PDF pages: "Some text in the font and character 'Geneva xxx' could not be displayed or printed correctly. The font could not be reencoded." We have been unable to determine the exact cause of this message; the pages seem to display and print as they should. Click OK and continue. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Overview of the AppleCare Service Source CD Package The AppleCare Service Source CD mailer now includes six CDsÑthe main Service Source CD, three Apple System Software Recovery CDs, the Service Training CD, and the TIL Companion CD.
