Installation Notes --On the Mac, some older Systems may experience trouble when running the program installer. If you can not successfully run the installer, you should manually copy the program files to your hard drive. To do this, open the CD-ROM drive volume icon, open the "Local Files" folder, and find the "Leap Into Nursery Rhymes" folder. Copy this folder to a location on your internal hard drive and then launch the program from inside this folder. 3. Configuration Notes: --Users running OSX/classic Mode must have read/write permission in order to properly run the program. --Users running Windows XP must be either a Power user or Administrator in order to properly run the program. --We strongly recommend quitting all other applications before running Leap Into Nursery Rhymes. --Users whose computer systems barely meet the minimum system requirements listed above may experience performance issues such as slow animation, poor syncopation, and/or dropped sounds. --To improve the performance of Leap Into Nursery Rhymes on low-end machines, try increasing the installed RAM, replacing the CD-ROM drive with a faster model, and/or upgrading the processor. Once your computer has over 16 MB of physical RAM free, adding additional RAM will not improve program performance. --Users with large swap disks (Windows) or virtual memory settings (Macintosh) may experience performance problems if not enough physical RAM is available for the program to run in. Physical RAM is memory which exists as RAM chips inside your computer, as opposed to virtual memory which uses portions of your hard drive as a replacement for physcial RAM. 4. Voice Recording Notes--Macintosh Specific --On the Mac, it may be necessary to change your "Sound In" setting in order to allow your computer to record audio from a microphone. To do this, open the "Monitors and Sound" or "Sound" control panel (depending upon which System software you are running). Find the control which describes the Sound In setting (in the Sound and Monitors control panel this is called the "Sound Monitoring Source") and change it to External Mic, Built-in Mic, or simply Sound In, whichever is appropriate for your system and configuration. Some Macs have built-in mics and others ship with an external mic which must be connected to the external mic jack. --On some Mac LC series models - the LC475 and LC575, Leap Into Nursery Rhymes can not record sound. --On 68K AV Macs (i.e. the Quadra 840AV and the Quadra 660AV), recording audio will result in a scratchy sound that is not pleasant to the ears when using Sound Manager 3.0 and earlier. To avoid this problem, make sure these users are running version 3.1 of the Sound Manager or later. --In general, systems running Sound Manager 3.0 and earlier are not recommended. Systems running Sound Manager 2.0 will be noticeably slower. --If "Speakable Items" is turned on in the Speech Manager, Leap Into Nursery Rhymes cannot record sound and will generate a -8601 error. This occurs because only one application can use sound-recording capabilities at a time. Turn off Speakable Items before launching Leap Into Nursery Rhymes. --The default installation of System 7.5 (but not previous or later versions such as System 7.5.1) when installed on PowerPC machines, does not install Sound Manager, which is required in order to use the recording features in Leap Into Nursery Rhymes. If you try to run Leap Into Nursery Rhymes on a system with no Sound Manager extension, you will receive a "Xtra not found" error when you enter the Voice Recorder section of the product. To fix the problem you must install the Sound Manager extension (preferably version 3.1 or later) in the Extensions folder of your system and reboot. Please contact your nearest Apple system software vendor to get a copy of the Sound Manager which is appropriate for your computer, or try copying ONE of the Sound Manager extensions included on this CD in the "Installer Files" folder. 5. Voice Recording Notes--Windows Specific --In Windows, it may be necessary to change your "Sound In" setting in order to allow your computer to record audio from a microphone. The method for doing this varies with manufacturer, however you should be able to adjust this setting using the Multimedia or Sound control panel. By default, most Windows-based systems are pre-configured correctly for mic input, so be careful when changing these settings. Consult your computer's manual or manufacturer for help in getting your microphone to work. --Leap Into Nursery Rhymes cannot record reliably on Windows NT systems because it relies on Microsoft's MCI for recording and the WAV recording function of MCI itself does not work reliably on most NT systems. --Leap Into Nursery Rhymes cannot record reliably on Windows systems which use the SoundBlaster 128 PCI sound card. This is because, at press time, the drivers of the SB128 PCI card cannot play or record via MCI after other sounds in Leap Into Nursery Rhymes have played. Check with the SoundBlaster manufacturer to see if their latest drivers fix this issue. --If you have Intel RSX audio installed, you may not be able to record and play back sounds in Leap Into Nursery Rhymes. Intel RSX displays miniature headphones in the Windows toolbar when it is active. 6.
