Subject: Castles-Siege & Conquest Demo
Date: 1 Mar 1994 17:02:22 +1100

Hi, here's the newly release demo version of Castles. Its similar in style to
Warlords (from SSG) I guess. The following is from the very extensive readme
that accompanies it. The file is a binhexed self-extracting archive.

Enjoy

Andrew Jeffrey
Uni of Wollongong

------------------
Introduction

Welcome to the world of CASTLES: SIEGE AND CONQUEST. This game is intended to
test your skills as an administrator, a military leader, and a politician.
During the course of play, you must maintain the delicate balance between the
administrative, military and political functions of your dominion. The names
of the Lords and the territories in Castles are based on 14th century France, a
tumultuous period in European history, which featured the prolonged conflict of
The Hundred Years War. This century was marked by chaos, as the struggle for
land in France had a high cost in human life. The blood of English and French
soldiers saturated the soil and the peasants of these lands were forcefully
removed from their homes, raped or killed. The Lords of territories battled
each other in an attempt to expand their realms. When a Lord conquered new
lands, he would build castles there to substantiate his power over the newly
acquired territory.

Your mission is to unite the territories of the mythical land of Bretagne in
the midst of this bloody turmoil and eventually become King. It is a
formidable task, one that requires intestinal fortitude, cunning and risk
taking. If you possess these qualities then you are ready to accept the
challenge of Castles: Siege and Conquest!

This Demo Program

This demonstration version of Castles: Siege and Conquest will last for about a
year and a half before the game stops. You won't be able to save or load your
progress, as you can in the real game. This demonstration version includes
only one plot to test your kingly worthiness, and only one QuickTime(tm) movie to
enhance the game playing ambiance.

System requirements

To run Castles: Siege and Conquest, you need a color Macintosh running System
6.0.7 or later. Your monitor should be set to 256 colors. If you are running
a version of System 6, you should have the fonts "Helvetica 9" and "Helvetica
18" installed in your System. (If you are running a version of System 7 or
later, these fonts are probably already present.) The sample movie included
will run if you have QuickTime 1.5 or later.

From: garner@auscs.sps.mot.com (Bob Garner)
Subject: Checkermania 1.04 Demo
Date: Mon, 26 Apr 93 09:34:02 -0500

CHECKERMANIA is a magical twist on the old game of checkers. The
introduction of magic spells has transformed it into a very exciting
and more challenging game. In addition to magic, a "Return the Flag"
variation was added to eliminate any chance of stalemate. Two players
can play against each other or you can match your wits against the
computer. It's great fun for all ages.

CHECKERMANIA has superb color graphics and sound. For machines not
equipped with color, it will also run in B&W.

This program is a demonstration version of CHECKERMANIA. Try it out
and if you like it you can order the fully functional version directly
from Majestic Software for only $12. Just use the on-line order form
by clicking the "How To Order..." button in CHECKERMANIA's opening
window. This will provide you all the instructions needed to order.

Some of CHECKERMANIA's features have been disabled in this
demonstration version; but enough have been left in to allow you to
see if you really like it. CHECKERMANIA's on-line help explains all
the features of the full working version (so you can see what you're
missing!). Also, the "Custom Setup" and "Preferences" windows have
Balloon Help.

This is a program which patches civilization to do many things.
I am Robin Emig raeming@ucdavis.edu

This program simply applies a series of cracks that have been collected
since Civilization came out. These all work on Civ 1.08. The one problem is
that some cracks crack the same area that others do making things unreliable.
To be on the safe side don't crack two things that are similiar, such as Everything
cost $0 and everytime you buy something you get $32000.

If you apply many cracks
at once and not all of them take, try doing one at a time.

Also it would be wise to make a copy of the Civ app before applying these cracks

Here is a list of the cracks and their actions:
buy=32000 Everytime you buy something you get $32000
Sell=32000 Everytime you sell something you get $32000
Buy=$0 #1		Everything cost $0
Buy=$0 #2 Everything cost $0 Different version of it
NoLoseMoney You don't loose money each turn
ClearMap You get to see the entire map
NoWarming Stops Global warming
WinOffense Win every offensive battle
NoFoodShortage Your people don't die due to food shortage(cities no grow either)
Moses Troops can walk on water ( This one has problems with others)
SailOnLand Boats on land (The most powerful, less cheat one I like)
Tech1Turn Each tech takes one turn ( computer gets it too)
Infiniteflight	Airplanes don't run out of feul ( This one has problems with others)
Cities on h20	Cities on water ( pretty lame , max size is ?? 2)
NoQuestions Kills that anoying test of your leadership
NoCopyProtection Same as above??? I have no idea

Thanks to the person(s) that originally discovered the cracks, ? Nemo ?

I am not responsible for anything unforseen problems this program may cause.

If you like this program and would like to see more of its kind
please send me $5.

Subject: civ updater for all versions

Civilization 1.0.7,1.0.8->1.1 updater:

This program will patch both Civilization 1.0.7 and 1.0.8 to version
1.1. The only difference between 1.0.8 and 1.1 is the 'vers' resource,
which has probably led to some confusion. This patches the application in
place, so use it only on a copy.

I made this with ResCompare to clear up the confusion regarding the
1.0.7->1.0.8 and 1.0.8->1.1 updaters, one of which seems to have
disappeared from the archive. There were also some requests on
comp.sys.mac.games for such an updater. Enjoy.

I guess this should go in /games/com to replace the other updater.

Thanks, Jason Holtzapple

building armies and conquering cities and fully intends to
capture the world for itself.

are available. You can get the full unrestricted version with
a printed manual, network play and a disk full of goodies by mail.

This is a driving simulator put out by Ford a few years ago. It
lets you drive selected Ford models on three tracks: Test Track, which
has an obstacle course, City Challenge, which is like a freeway, and Back

FS-ATC 2.1

Air Traffic Control software for
Microsoft Flight Simulator Macintosh version 4.0.

FS-ATC is an air traffic controller software that operates with
Microsoft Flight Simulator. It runs on the background and provides
full air traffic control from tower, approach/departure and center.

FS-ATC uses some undocumented apple events to find out position, direction,
altitude and speed of FS aircraft. Using this information FS-ATC sends
messages to the pilot using notification manager dialog box, playing
sampled sounds, or using Speech Manager to speak the messages.

This version (2.1) introduces a system-wide menu located in the right
side of menubar, that is used to send pilot's messages to controllers.

This version also provides a workaround for overseas flights. A route
from New York JFK to London Heathrow is included.

No doubt many folks would love to fly above the clouds from
Pittsburgh International to Morgantown, West Virginia--home of the
11-0 Sugar Bowl bound West Virginia Mountaineers! (Go Ers!) With the
PIT-MGW controller and a few other goodies, you will be able to do
that just that. You'll even be able to communicate in real time with
simulated air traffic controllers. The controllers will call out
positioning information to you all along the route. When you break
out of the clouds, Morgantown's Hart field will be dead ahead!

The PIT-MGW controller simulates a Crown (USAir) commuter flight from
Pittsburgh International to Hart Field in Morgantown. The air route
follows the actual route flown by the commuter (weather permitting)
several times a day, seven days a week. The aircraft usually flown is
a Shorts 330. With full out throttle and a little imagination,
Microsoft Flight Simulator's Cessna 182 can come close to emulating
  the Shorts.

This is the first of what will be (hopefully) many controllers for
Microsoft Flight Simulator and Miika Asunta's FS-ATC. I would enjoy
hearing from private or commercial pilots or from air traffic
controllers. Maybe you have a flight plan that would be fun to
simulate. I'd be glad to work with pilots or controllers in creating
new controller files, especially for ILS routes that professional or
  private pilots have flown.

                               Getting started

To use this controller you need three things:
     1. Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 (Mac version)
     2. FS-ATC 2.1 Air Traffic Control software for Microsoft Flight Simulator
Macintosh version 4.0 (Available on Sumex-Aim and Nautilus CD-ROM.)
     3. Mallard Scenery files, SD-11 World Scenery and SD-9 World Scenery.

Please see the read me file. It contains more information on the
controller and on how it operates.

I worked very hard to make this controller as accurate as possible.
Its development involved numerous conversations with professional
pilots and air traffic controllers. I hope you enjoy it.

Gate reminds me very much of a couple of earlier Mac games I

run-around-the-land-and-kill-the-nasties type of sword and

Hello Glider-Fans!

Enclosed in this sit-archive is a very beautiful house with
more than 130 rooms which requires the commercial game Glider
(Version 4.0 and up).
My sister, now 12 years old (the easy, amusing rooms) and I (now 13)

The names are in german; so keep the dictionary ready!
It's very funny to play it! :-)
To play, place them in the same folder as the game and drag
the first one ("Bloedelhaus") onto the Glider application,
otherwise it doesn't work, at least on my Mac.

Enjoy, it's highly recommended!

Hellcats 1.0 to 1.0.4 updater
This patch only converts Hellcats 1.0 to Hellcats version 1.0.4. There is
another patch program to convert 1.0.2 and 1.0.3 to 1.0.4 (I don't know of any
patch for 1.0.1, or if this versions was ever officially released).

You must patch a "fresh" copy of Hellcats (one that has not been run before).

As a double check, the Finder's information about the version of Hellcats I
used to make the patch indicates:
Size: 397 K
Created: Jan 7, 1992 6:26 PM
Modified: Feb 5, 1992 4:55 PM

To find out what version you have, launch the program and select the about
Hellcats menu item found in the apple menu; the version information can be
found in the splash window. (some versions don't contain the correct version
information in the Finder's "get info" window. and others are reported to lack
version information in the splash window.)

What's New:
The major feature of version 1.0.4 is the support of Sound Manager 3.0 or
greater. (AV users can now have sound for their game.)

Versions 1.01 to 1.03 were various bug fixes.

I've enclosed the "Pacific Conflict" data base because it is slightly larger
and has a more recent modification date then the one that came on my version
1.0 disk.

Enjoy.

Here's a new edition of the Hellcats/Leyte Gulf FAQ. This version
adds a pointer to the updaters to fix the sound problems on AV and
newer Macs.

It should replace the old one in game/com/hellcats-faq.txt.

Hellcats/LeyteCanSpell!

***************************************************************
** Requires the flight simulator Hellcats (incl. Leyte Gulf) **
***************************************************************

Those folks from Graphic Simulations can sure program a flight simulator,
can't they? But they can't spell worth a darn; dialog boxes in Hellcats
and Leyte (and the manuals for that matter) are absolutely full of
stupid spelling errors (like "acheived", in one dialog box that successful
pilots get to see a lot).

This annoys me. If it doesn't annoy you, read no further and trash this.
If it annoys you too, use ResEdit to paste these corrected STR# resources
into their respective applications (Hellcats and LeyteGulf). All I did
was use ResEdit on the original STR# resources and edit their text to
correct spellings, capitalize Hellcat, etc. You could use this same
technique to customize Hellcats messages (e.g. "You really bit the
big one there, ace.").

Graphic Simulations or anyone else is welcome to take these STR# resources
and create a more user-friendly patching application.

[Usual warning: ResEdit can be a dangerous toy, make backup copies first]

Surely this doesn't violate Graphic Simulation's copyright since the
STR# resources alone are of no use to anyone who doesn't own Hellcats/Leyte.

'Nuf said.

How embarassing - a minor bug crept into the version of Leyte Rescue that
I released yesterday (Friday) at the last minute which may prevent it from
recognising the Hellcats Preferences file. Here is a minor update which
fixes the (non-fatal) problem.

LEYTE RESCUE 1.01

This little utility will recover non-active pilots in Hellcats: Missions
at Leyte Gulf. It restores pilots to "Active" status but does not change
any of their other attributes (ie: points, rank, kills, etc are remembered
from their former life).

It's been tested on a Mac IIfx running System 7.0.1 - I make no
guarantees that it will work with your system, so you should
probably take suitable precautions (i.e. back up first) in case
anything goes wrong.

To recover your pilots, launch Leyte Rescue, when the SF dialog appears
up just select the Hellcats Preferences file in your Preferences Folder
and then wait a few seconds. Launch Leyte Gulf and you should see your
resurrected pilots on the roster.

Since this is a very small application (2k) I've attached it below in
BINHEX 4 format.

This application may be freely distributed.

Good luck,

//Paul (paulr@syma.sussex.ac.uk)

Hellcats Rescue is an application which will resurrect dead 'Hellcats Over the

useless to anyone who does not have Hellcats Over the Pacific.

This post contains the Hellcats Rescue application, and documentation; they are

This is a fix for the bug in the Team Path in the Mac version of
the LucasArts game "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis."

In the buggy version, when you try to land the balloon on the "X"
in the desert, the game hangs and a particularly nasty buzz comes
out of the computer's speaker.

To fix it, replace the old application file with the new one in
this archive, "Indy 12/15/92." You can throw out the old application.

The Present - Caldoria Hts. Apts.:

First thing you need to do is turn left, walk forward and pick up
the TRANSPORT CARD off the desk. Next leave your appartment, go into
the elevator and go to the first floor. Stand in front of the
transporter and click on it. When it opens walk into it. Put the
transport card in the slot on the right side when you are asked and
click on the Temporal Security Annex button.

Here's some stuff you can do that is not essential to solving the game:

- Turn the desk lamp in your room on/off
- Flush your toilet (whee! - how much did you spend on your CD drive? :)
- Turn your water faucet on/off
- Sit down on some of your furniture
- Try going to floors 2 and 3
- Try going to someplace other than the Security Annex
  (this will kill you)
- Listen to all the door recordings
- Watch the movie at the kiosk

The Present - Temporal Security Annex:

Walk forward from the transporter down the hall to the door and click on
it. When asked for your code, enter the code from the manual (p. 9).
There is no way to get to work on time, so don't sweat the late arrival
message. When the door opens, walk thru and hang a left. Go into the
Command Center and turn towards the computer monitors. Click the left
monitor, enter your code (again on p.9) and watch the 3 movies. When
you're done, click the RTN button.

Now a whole bunch of alarms will go off. Head to the Ready Room and
walk up to the BioSupport Suit generator. Click on the screen and get
your biosuit. Right next to it on the right you will find a cabinet.
Click on the blue glass to open it up and get the JOURNEYMAN KEY.
Click the compartment below that and get the MAPPING BIOCHIP and
PEGASUS BIOCHIP.

Leave the Ready Room and go down the hallway to the right. Open the door,
go down the elevator and walk towards the time machine until it opens.
When it opens, walk into it. Inside the time machine, click on the
200 million BC button and click the activate button to transport back
in time.

Here's some stuff you can do that is not essential to solving the game:

- look at the time machine through the windows on the upper level
- try opening the left disk drive

200 Million BC:

There's lots of cool dinosaur noises and shadows here, but I don't
think they can get to you in the valley you are in. You can however
walk off the cliff that you start near so be careful. All you need
to do is turn around and walk down the canyon to the end. Use the
Journeyman Key on the Journeyman symbol to open the vault and get
the HISTORICAL LOG DISK. Then use your recall button (Journeyman
symbol).

Temporal Security Annex (altered timeline):

Go back up to the Command Center. Open the right disk drive and
insert the log disk. The computer will then compute what events
have been altered. Click on the right monitor and check out the
6 movies which explain the way things ARE and the way they are
SUPPOSED to be. Head back to the time machine.

Now things get tricky. You can go to either Mars Colony or the
Science Center, but not, I think, to NORAD VI first (as you need
items from the other places)

Mars Colony:

Walk down the hall, away from the emergency doors, until you see
the robot walk by. Follow him (hang a left) and go into the
Maintenance Transport. Go into the car and pick up the
WIRE CUTTERS and the MAINTENANCE KEY in the toolbox in the rear.
Face forward and throw the switch to move through the tunnel.

When you leave the transport bay, you will see the robot again when
you turn left. Turn right and walk forward and he will go by you.
Pick up the OXYGEN MASK and then use it in the indentation in the
middle of the 'rack' (for lack of a better term) to charge it up.
Go through the door that the robot came out of. Use the console to
return the repair platform to its last position. Use the maintenance
key to open the compartment and the console to perform a diagnostic
on the shield. You will discover an explosive device in a card slot.
The computer will ask if you want to disarm it. Say yes and you
get to play a game of "Mastermind".

<codes to be instered in a later version>

Once you disarm the bomb, get the ACCESS CARD BOMB and return the
platform to its original position. Go back to the spot you were
standing on when the robot threatened you and SAVE YOUR GAME using
the Interface BioChip. Open the airlock door, put on the oxygen
mask by clicking its picon and clicking use. Click the pressurize
button and when you hear the beep press the turn button.
Now would also be a good time to activate your Mapping BioChip.
Your task now is to navigate thru a maze in 8 minutes before
your oxygen supply runs out.

<map to be inserted in a later version>

Listen carefully for machinery clanking - that's your clue that you
are getting close to the mine elevator. Walk right into the moving
boxes (buckets?). You will then be taken to another floor. Move forward
when you are level - you will not automatically walk off the elevator,
you will keep going. Now go thru the airlock just like you did the
other one. You can remove the mask now if you wish. You will see
the robot heading for the shuttles and then an announcement that
a shuttle was launched. There is one shuttle left (#1 I think). Open the
door and get in.

PEACEFUL SOLUTION:
Nothing much happens now until you get into weapons range of the robot's
shuttle. Use the energy damping beam and shoot him until his power
gauge goes bright red. Then use the tractor beam. Then use the
transporter.

VIOLENT SOLUTION:
Same as the peacful solution but use the 'real' weapon (on the left
side of the display) to shoot the ship instead of the energy damping
beam.

Once you beam over, you will find the robot damaged. Open his head
and pick up the biochips. One is another mapping biochip. The
others are an OPTICAL MEMORY BIOCHIP and a TRACE BIOCHIP.
You have now completed this mission and restored time. You will
automatically be recalled to the present and the time machine
chamber. Check out your new biochips, especially the optical memory
chip which has a movie in it.

- The robot for this stage is named ARES

Here's some stuff you can do that is not essential to solving the game:

- Try looking out the windows.

Science Center:

When you arrive, you get shot with a dart. Your biosuit will
ask you if you want to remove it, say yes. Turn around and click
on the computer screen until it asks you for a sample. Drag the
dart into the center of the analysis chamber. Once it does
its stuff, turn around, take a step forward and turn right.
Use the big screen to create an antidote. This involves dragging
6 groups of molecules in a certain order to the main molecule.
You do this 3 times and the sequence does not change, so remember
the order. If you drag the wrong group, you need to start over
but there is no limit to the number of tries. Turn around again
and get the ANTIDOTE from the synthesizer. Use it on yourself.
At this point you can...

- Look at the hologram of the robot (turn right from the place
  you started)
- Look at Dr. Elliot's notes on the monitor on the left of
the starting place. There are 3 movies.
- Look at the dissection video by clicking on the microscope
near the monitor where Dr. Elliot's journals are (it's in the
lower left corner). This brings it up. Then click twice on the
main round viewer. NOT recommended for weak stomachs!
....but it isn't really THAT bad....

When you are done checking out the lab, open the door. Hang a left
and go all the way down the hall. You will see the 'Auditorium'
sign pointing to the left. Head RIGHT, then take the first left.
Head down to the purple door (last one on the left). Now would
be a good time to save the game. Open the door and walk forward.
Alternately, you can use the Trace BioChip to see which way the
robot went. It shows his foot steps and a small animation.

PEACEFUL SOLUTION:
Use the wire cutters to open the fire control box and sound the
alarm. Click on the green screen that pops out and click on 'test'.

VIOLENT SOLUTION:
Pull the electrical cable on the right side out. When the
'scientist' morphs into a robot, use the cable on the catwalk
he is standing on and zap him.

Again open his head and pull out all the biochips. You will find
another OPTICAL MEMORY BIOCHIP (whose contents will be added to the
existing chip if you have it and you should view once you return to
the present) as well as a RETINAL BIOCHIP and SHIELD BIOCHIP. When
the robot vaporizes, pick up the STUN GUN. You have completed this
mission and are automatically recalled to the time machine.

- The robot for this period is named MERCURY

Here's some stuff you can do that is not essential to solving the game:

- Let the robot carry out the assasination. You will need to restore
  the game, however.
- Getting too close to people will end the game. Watch out for
warnings when people are 15 and 10 meters away.

NORAD VI:

When you start this mission, immediately put on your oxygen mask.
Turn left and check out the monitor by clicking through all its
displays. Turning left again reveals a GAS CANISTER, which if
you pick it up will end the game. Instead open the door, walk thru
and turn left. The robot will shoot you a couple of times which
will drain your energy. Activating your Shield BioChip will reduce
the amount of damage you take by about one-half. Turn it on before
you turn left towards the robot. Walk down the hall turn left and
click on the door and see what the robot is up to. Once you're done,
turn around and head through the left door. Keep going forward through
the airlocks and sub bay to the control room. You will need to equalize
the pressure in the subdock by pressing and holding on the down
arrow until the right bar is level or less than the left bar.
Once you do that, the door will open.

In the control room, take a left and follow the signs to Alpha
sector. When you find the door with the retinal scanner on it,
activate your retinal biochip and click on the door. Once the
door is open walk forward to the missle override controls.
Next you play a little game where you use a trackball to move
a target over the map of the Earth. Your goal is to as quickly
as possible move the target over the active site and click the
override button. Once you do this 10 times, the system will
shutdown. There are 2 keys to doing this. One is to have a
fairly decent knowledge of world geography. The second is not
to treat the trackball like a real trackball; that is don't keep doing
click-drag-release, just click on the part of the trackball you
want the map to move and hold for as long as you want. e.g.
to move left, click and hold the left of the ball.

The robot is NOT a happy camper. Head to the sub dock control room.

PEACEFUL SOLUTION:
Turn right and look through the window. When the robot comes up and
is right in front of the window, activate the loading arm using the
programmed sequence (i.e. not manual). Fans of the movie "Aliens"
will recognise the sound effects.

VIOLENT SOLUTION:
Instead of turning right at the window, turn towards the pressure
door and click on it. You will see the pressure controls like usual,
but you can see the robot coming for you through the window.
Click and hold the up arrow to increase the pressure (right bar)
until it won't go up anymore. The robot very satisfyingly 'melts'.

You have defeated this robot, so open his head and get his OPTICAL
MEMORY BIOCHIP which you should view upon returning to the present
- which will happen automatically in a few moments.

- The robot for this period is named POSIEDON

Here's some stuff you can do that is not essential to solving the game:

- If you wait a long time at the Alpha 2 security door, you will get
a message telling you that the missles were launched and you failed.
It also says you will be recalled, but it didn't recall me.

Temporal Security Annex (time restored):

Head back to the transporter and go to Caldoria Heights Apartments.

Here's some stuff you can do that is not essential to solving the game:

- Try going someplace other than the appartments. You just get a message
  telling you that you can't.

Caldoria Hts. Apts. (time restored):

Head to the roof. Remember when the game started and you were
going down to the first floor and someone was going to the roof...?
It was probably the evil Dr. Sinclair himself! Anyway, all you will
find on the roof is a locked door. Use the access card bomb on the
door's slot. This blows a big hole in the wall. You probably won't get
your security deposit back, but you can now see Dr. Elliot Sinclair.
Use the stun gun on him.

Here's some stuff you can do that is not essential to solving the game:

- Go to the big panaramic window overlooking the capital building
on the first floor. The excited murmuring gets louder as you get
closer to the window and softer as you move away. If you look
closely at the window you can see your reflection.

That's it! Or is it...?

LOOSE ENDS:
But still several questions still exist (for me anyway):

- There is an empty biochip slot, is there another biochip?
- Can you do anything with the gas canister? If so, how can you
  pick it up?
- Is the Historical Reconfiguration Code used for anything?
- Who is the actor who plays Dr. Sinclair? I saw it on the back of
the box for the PC version but I forgot his name. It also said
he was in a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode. Just curious! :)
- Any news on an update for JMP using MacroMind 4.0 (better
  performance) or PowerPC?

Subject: [*] Mac Attack Upgrade to 1.1

This updater was sent to me by Bobby King of GameTek. He requested wide
dispersal of it. The accompanying note said:

Here is the Mac Attack 1.0 to 1.1 update. The new sound manager 3.0 is
included for 7.1 users that are having sound problems. The data file
should be copied to the Mac Attack folder to give the new level
configurations. The updater is a patchworks file that converts the old
version of the application to Mac Attack 1.1. The new application has a
better ending sequence and can now be turbo charged to increase the
speed of loading levels.

This is a demonstration version of MacAttack, a new commercial
arcade game from GameTek and New Reality. The demo will play on
any Mac with color quickdraw and can be played in 256, 16 or
B&W color mode.

MacAttack is a version of Tempest/Arashi, but with rendered
30-fps 3D graphics. The demo has 3 levels of play and a several
characters from the commercial version of the game which has 30
levels and over a dozen types of enemies to fight.

I am in no way involved with the people who created this game.
I'm just passing it along to the Internet archives. It was
originally uploaded from America Online.

like a movie, only you're the main character.

Here is an updater to the game called 'Myst'.
There already is an update an the archives.
As that update is not compressed and not differential
(it just replaces the original file) it's just much
too big (200K?). This update is about 3K, 13K including
the updater application. It's stand-alone, created with
updatemaker.

I mailed it before, but it didn't show up on the archives.
It's for the games/commercial section.

Out of this World is a cool polygon-graphics action-adventure game with
rotoscoped animation, brought to you by MacPlay. This demo lets you
play through the first level of the game (about 5 to 7 percent of the
entire commercial product), no holds barred. You need a 256-color
Macintosh of any sort and 2200K free RAM.

Out of this World was the first game to win the "Platinum Triad Award"
from "Computer Game Review" magazine.

This is version 1.0.1 of the demo, which fixes a bug in version 1.0 of
the demo where the game would crash if you tried using the menus when
Sound Manager 3.0 installed. This affected the Centris and Quadra AV
computers, all Power Macintosh computers, and in fact anybody else who
happened to have the Sound Manager 3.0 extension installed. (Oops!)

demo version 1.0.2

This updated version of the Operation Intercept demo includes the following
changes:

- All known bugs have been fixed. This includes problems that some Quadra
  owners reported.
- Support for the Gravis GamePad has been added.
- Some changes have been made to the interface to make the Intercept
screens easy to navigate from the keyboard, mouse or GamePad.

Defend your solar system from the wrath of the evil Spoox empire! In
Operation Intercept, you pilot a spaceship in your attempt to destroy wave
after wave of invading enemy ships. Collect the bonus items you get for
killing an entire wave and spend them at the upgrade/repair stations, where
you can buy options for your spaceship such as double-shot, triple-shot,
spawn-shot, shields, and more. Challenge an opponent in the head-to-head
two-player mode!

In the Operation Intercept demo, you will experience the head-spinning,
bone-shaking speed of Intercept as well as the basic features of the game,
while the more advanced features and levels are left up to your imagination.
Buy the real version and you won't have to imagine!

USING CHESS

Opening Chess brings you to the Chess Room. From here you can invite someone
to play chess or choose to watch a match in progress.

The Chess Rooms window shows a list of all players. Icons appear next to
each name to show what that person is doing. A hand indicates that the
player is currently competing in a chess match, an eye shows that the person
watching a match, and an hourglass is used for players who are waiting in the
Chess Room.

You may talk to other people in the Chess Room by using the Public Talk
window. (If you do not see this window, try moving the main chess window
until the Talk window is revealed.)

To watch a match in progress, you simply select a competing player and choose
Watch from the Chess menu.

To begin a chess match of your own, you must invite another person to play.
Do this by selecting the name of your desired opponent and choosing Invite
from the Chess menu. After you choose the game settings, the player you
choose will be informed of your invitation. If he or she accepts, the game
will begin. If not, you will be told that your invitation has been declined.

When the chess match begins, you will move from the Chess Room to the Chess
Board. If it is your move, Your Turn will appear on the right side of the
window. Otherwise, you will see Waiting.

To move a piece, click and drag to the space to which you want to move. When
the destination square becomes highlighted, release the mouse button. Only
the squares which represent legal moves can be selected. If you find that
you cant make a move which you think is legal, it is probably because that
move would place you in check.

When your opponent makes a move, you will notice that two squares will remain
highlighted briefly. These squares indicate which piece was moved, as well
as the space from which it was moved. If your opponents move puts you in
check, you will receive a Check message. When in check, you will only be
allowed to make moves which take you out of check.

A match can end with a checkmate, a draw, a player resignation, or a player
running out of time. After a match, you will remain at the Chess Board until
you decide to Put Board Away using the Chess menu.

Outland Chess supports four ways in which a match may end in a draw. These
include:

- the same board situation three times
- 50 reversible moves in a row
- insufficient mating material
- no possible moves

Outland Chess also supports en passant captures.

SPACEWARD HO! OVERVIEW

The goal of Spaceward Ho! is to conquer the galaxy. You start out on a
single, wonderful, heavily populated planet. You have just become capable of
building your first interstellar space ships. So you build a couple of
exploratory ships and send them to nearby stars. Some of the planets at
these stars will be more habitable than others.

Once you find a planet thats like your home planet, you build a Colony Ship
and go colonize it. Once there, you make its temperature better by
terraforming it, mining the metal from it, and using it as a base for further
exploration and colonization. After a number of years the new planets
population will grow so large that it make a profit, just like your home
planet.

Youll hop from planet to planet expanding your galactic empire. Somewhere
along the line, youll run into opposition bad guys (other Outland players)
who are out to conquer the galaxy, too. In addition to exploring and
colonizing, youll need to defend yourself against the more aggressive of
these alien races. You can do this by building defensive satellites at your
colonies. You can also defend yourself by building fleets of fighters and
preemptively attacking the aliens. If fighting isnt to your taste, you can
befriend some of these aliens, creating allies instead of enemies.

In addition to building ships and terraforming and mining planets, you spend
money on technology research. The first ships you build are capable of
travelling to other stars, but they cant go far, theyre slow, they cant
attack or defend themselves well, and they require a lot of metal to build.
When you spend money on research, your ship technology levels will improve.
To no ones surprise, better ships will destroy obsolete ones in battle.

When you have conquered all enemy colonies, you win.

ULTRA-QUICK HO! INSTRUCTIONS

The Ho! Lobby is where you set up games and talk to other players. OutlandHo
is where you conquer the galaxy. You can switch back and forth during the
game. Bring up the Ho! Talk window to talk to other Ho! players at any time.

Learning Spaceward Ho! is fun. Play with the bar charts and pie charts to
adjust spending. Click on the messages in the map to make them go away.
Double-click on a colony to design and build ships. Drag from one star to
another to move those ships. Ask others for advice. Experiment. Conquer the
galaxy.

GLOSSARY

Ally:	An alien with which you share refueling privileges and a
non-aggression pact.

Enemy: Anybody that isnt allied with you.

Gravity:	Everything that cant be changed about a star system. Any planet
between 0.4 G and 2.5 G can be made profitable, if enough people are on it
and it is fully terraformed. An ideal planet is 1.0 G. Each player has a
different idea of what 1.0 G is.

Income: The money you took in last turn.

Marooned: What a ship is when it doesnt have enough fuel to leave the
planet its on.

Metal: The sum of all nonrenewable resources.

Mini: The amount of shrinking a ship has. High Mini ships use less Metal,
but cost more Money.

Money: The sum of all replenishable resources. You get money every turn
from profitable planets.

Planet: The same thing as a star. Represents the whole star system.

Radical Tech: High-risk, high gain research. Sometimes you get something
really great, sometimes you get garbage.

Range: How far a ship can reach without refueling. A Range 8 ship can go
out 4 and back 4, or can go out 5 and be stuck.

Satellite: A ship that cant move. Its Range is zero. Satellites are much
smaller than other ships.

Shield: Something that protects a ship. A Shield Tech 8 ship will prove
almost invincible to a Weapon Tech 4 ship.

Ship Savings: Money youve accumulated to build ships with. You get
interest on this money. If youve spent more than youve saved, you pay
interest.

Speed: How fast a ship goes. A Speed 3 ship will take 2 turns to go to a
star that is 5 units away.

Star:	The same as a planet.

Temperature: Everything that can be changed about a star system. The ideal
temperature is 72. Each player has a different idea of what 72 is.

Terraforming: Improving the temperature of a star system. When a planet is
fully terraformed, its temperature is 72.

The Ho!: What experienced players call Spaceward Ho!. If you want to be
really cool, say, youre playing the Ho!

Weapon: Something a ship shoots. A Weapon Tech 8 ship will rip apart Shield
Tech 4 ships.

This text file is a small "tutorial" of sorts describing how to
use a hex editor to edit your characters in the new, and fantastic,
PathWays Into Darkness. It is a "how to" edit in items, health, position
in dungeon, proficiency and all. It is a must have if you are stuck in the
game (or out of ammo!) and need a little boost. It is also a large
spoiler (it does not include any spoilers on any of the puzzles or
what to do in the game) if you use it the wrong way... Some people tend
tothink that using it in the wrong way is actually the right way and adds
to the game... :) You deside, fun discretion is advised.

Here's a little program called Pathways Into Cheating for all of you that
play Pathways Into Darkness by Bungee Software. This program will allow you
to edit saved game files (for the full game, NOT the demo) to change your
character to make the game easier to play. It's got a nice mac interface
and has been fairly widely tested. Now you don't need to use a sector
editor to edit your characters!

Features include:
o adding/deleting any item.
o making grenade launchers w/ many grenades (autofire grenades!)
o raising your health points.
o raising your skill levels
o teleporting to various locations in the pyramid.
o making your character appear to be left-handed
o recharging your crystals.
o resetting the game time.
o many shortcuts to make editing painless process.

This cheater is not supported by Bungee Software, so don't hassle them if
it doesn't work for you. Use only on a backup copy of your saved games
file.

A few things that I am planning on fixing, but havn't got around to it yet:
  - the documentation really sucks (needs a total re-write).
  - the prefs don't save yet.
  - no on-line help.
  - the graphics are kinda weak (low on the priority list).
  - no cut&paste capabilities.
Other than that, it works and you can tweak the crap out of your PoP levels.
  Have big fun,

Here is a demo from Humongous Entertainment called Putt-Putt Joins
the Parade. It is fully playable, but only contains a
small sampling of the full program. It is designed for younger
children (my 3.5 year old loves it) and is a task-oriented
adventure type game. There are lots of hidden goodies to find,
complete with animation and sound effects. The demo requires a
Mac LC III or better, set to 256 colors, and 2 MB free RAM.

Some command keys for the demo: Q-quit, R-restart, P-pause,
M-music on/off, D-voice/sfx on/off, T-display the text, and
ESC-bypass a scene.

I just realized that I had binhexed this file twice the first time
I uploaded it. Here it is again (I promise I only did it once this
 time!). Sorry about the waste.

>From the README:

This archive contains these files:
*"Updater to Shanghai II 1.05" (updates earlier versions of Shanghai II to
  version 1.05)
*"Postcards ad" (displays and can print an ad/order form for "Postcards for
  Shanghai II")

BUGS FIXED IN SHANGHAI II 1.05
*After Dark, QuickMail, Eudora and SuperClock will no longer crash when they
try to beep or play sound while Shanghai II is running.
*Version 1.0 crashed under A/UX due to sound driver incompatibilities. Sound
and music are now disabled under A/UX.
*Dragon`s Eye games will no longer end if a Slayer`s hand is empty and the
Slayer still has legal moves on the board.
*Several small bugs that might have caused seemingly random crashes have been
fixed. This includes the occasional crashes after the fourth tournament game
or while showing scores during a tournament on certain configurations of
  Macs.
*Sound now works with Sound Manager 3.0 (required on AV Macs)
*The program no longer crashes after the second game of a tournament on the
MacClassic II. The problem may have occurred on other Macs as well.

Here's a self-UnStuffing demo version of Shanghai II: Dragon's Eye.
Shanghai II is a sequel to the popular Shanghai, winner of the
1986 MacUser Editor's Award for Best Entertainment Product and
1989 MacWorld Game Hall-of-Famer. The basic game is the same:
remove matching pairs from a pile of 144 tiles until the pile
is gone, or you run out of moves. But this version has a wealth
of new features, art and sound.

*2700K of b&w and 256-color scanned and hand-drawn art, 900K of
 sounds & music
*Eight built-in animated tilesets (e.g., Sports, Animals, Fantasy)
and the ability to use your own art
*Thirteen built-in board layouts and a full-featured layout
construction set so you can create your own layouts
*Nine game variations including new types of Challenge and
 Tournament
*More help features like Show Remaining Tiles and Suggest Move
*Dragon's Eye: a completely new 2-player game using Shanghai-
like rules. Can be played against a friend or against the Mac
*Art specifically for 9" b&w, 12" color, and 13" color screens
(there's access to all of the art that works on your screen size
  and type)
*System 7-compatible; works on any Mac from Plus on up; no copy
 protection; complete on-line help

A Crowning Guide to Castles: Siege & Conquest

Version 1.0 May 1994

Please direct all comments and additional tactics and strategies to "poulee@cs.uh.edu".

This guide is written presuming players are playing the "Impossible" level with "Geographic" product distribution. Hence if one comprehends the winning approaches elucidated in this guide, one should have less trouble applying them in the lesser playing levels. Another assumption is that players are role-playing the Valois ruler.

Introduction

CS&C is an excellent strategy game that has tremendous play and replay values through the many carefully and splendidly accomplished implementation of game elements. Computer City sells it for $39.95 versus $49.94 in Software Etc in Houston.

This player has played as the Valois King, Yoyoboy, to be declared King of Bretagne by The Pope in the month of January, in the year 1819 after the death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, with the rating Emperor (points above 12000) in the Impossible level. The following is an excursion of the fine points King Yoyoboy has gleaned through those tumultuous years of intense administrative, diplomatic and military maneuvering.

Here are a couple starter cities that I created for use with SimCity 2000.
They were created using the Macintosh version of SimCity2000 and saved in
the Terrain Edit mode so that all you have to do is place any tress or
water you wish, and click 'Done'. Then you can pick in which year and at
what level you begin.

If you like these, please let me know and I will create more. This
software is not actually shareware, but I would appreciate if you would
share any cities you build using these terrains by e-mailing them to me at

Subject: Spaceward Ho! 3.0 Demo
Date: Sat, 12 Jun 93 1:14:42 PDT

Hey! Here's the Spaceward Ho! 3.0 Demo from Delta Tao Software... This
is a playable demo. This isn't one of those multi-megabyte disturbing
QuickTime movie demos. You can play against 2 computer opponents in a small
galaxy and amazingly enough the real version is even better. Anyway,
the demo runs in color or b&w and runs on any Mac that has 1 meg of
ram free as well as System 6.0.5 or greater.

The main limitation of the demo is that your tech levels are limited
and the computer players' levels aren't. See if you can beat 'em anyway...

Here's a blurb from the back of the real (non-demo) Spaceward Ho! packaging:

"Spaceward Ho! is a strategy game of awesome scope, casting you as the
leader of a spacefaring race. Your goal is to explore and to colonize
the galaxy. Of course, you are not alone. As you discover new worlds
to colonize and terraform or mine, you'll find aliens bent on their
own galactic conquest opposing your expanding empire. Ally with them,
or fight them using ships built with your latest technological
advances. And if you use your resources (both limited and renewable)
cleverly, you'll conquer the galaxy!

 * Play against up to 20 computer opponents, or against friends on an
AppleTalk network

 * Every game is unique: choose type of galaxy, number of stars, and
artificial intelligence level

 * Research new technologies (weapons, shields, miniaturization,
engines, and radical) to build custom spaceships

 * Runs in color on color Macintoshes"

p.s. You can distribute this demo freely as long as you don't charge
money for it. Upload it, duplicate it, give it away. Knock yourself out.

Spaceward Ho! was written by Peter Commons and lots of it was designed
by Joe Williams. Art by Howard Vives and Bob Van de Walle.

The demo, 1-, 4-, and 8-bit graphics files are being sent separately.

To sum up: You MUST download one of the graphics files when you

the graphics aren't as good, either.

Subject: Spectre Supreme Demo TEST UPLOAD PART ONE ONLY

Here is a demo of Spectre Supreme, the souped-up version of that old
favourite (of some) Spectre. This happens to be a UK demo and so contains
UK distribution info. Spectre Supreme features a new bunch of nasties
including slicer tanks, acid pools and auto-gun turrets (very hard to
destroy until you figure out how :-)). You can even go into negative
cyberspace and zoom around underground.

Spectre Supreme is sluggish on an LC/Mac II class machine - if you are
playing on one of these, you can speed up the demo by not selecting Filled
Polygons and Complex Shapes. This demo requires 1.8 Mb of memory for
itself.

This is the last major release of SWE. From now on, unless there are

This is a copy of the Spelunx Demo which has some color added.

This looks like an interative kids game, where you travel in a
cave running into all sorts of things. I think I saw some counting
games and other educational things that you run into.
I believe it was made by the same people who made Manhole.

Subject: Spin Doctor Demo [game]

This is a demonstration version (limited to a few levels only)
of Spin Doctor, a new commercial strategy/arcade type of game
by Callisto "SuperMazeWars" Corporation. Spin Doctor needs 256
colors or grays to run.

Spin Doctor is hard to describe -- it is truly like no game
I've ever seen before -- but basically you have to move a
rotating wand from point to point on a large grid, in search of
a 'goal' gridpoint. While doing so, you not only have to deal
with various types of enemy wands who stalk the grid in their
own mysterious ways, but also with spikes, acid droplets,
moving doors, bombs, fuses, and lots more fun stuff like that.

Your mileage may vary, but I think that if you liked Oxyd you
are probably going to LOVE Spin Doctor.

I am in no way involved with the people who created this game.
I'm just passing it along to the Internet archives. It was
originally uploaded from America Online.

Hiya,

Here is an updater for the game Warlords by SSG. The updater takes the
game to 1.1.3 from 1.* or 1.1.*. It fixes several bugs that can cause
crashes.

I am posting this for SSG and am not affiliated with them in any way except
as a happy customer.

Word Connection 1.0.5 Demo

Word Connection is a new word search game that will challenge the minds of
adults and children with a variety of puzzle configurations and a wide range
of difficulty levels.

Word Connection's puzzle boards are made of hexagon, square, or triangular
shaped cells, each containing a letter. Players form words from letters in
connecting cells. Points are awarded based on the number and size of the
words found.

Word Connection includes hints, puzzle solutions and definitions of words in
the puzzles. As you search for words, the game offers hints to help you. At
the end of a round of play Word Connection will show you the words you missed
and the definitions of any unfamiliar words.

The full version of Word Connection offers a different puzzle every time a
round is played. In the demo version only one puzzle is available for the
small and medium size boards and the large size puzzles are not available.

The minimum system required is a Mac Plus, system 6.0.7, and 1 megabyte of
RAM. The full version of game requires 4 megabytes of hard disk space. Word
Connection is recommended for ages ten to adult.

Word Connection is available directly from Action Software for $59.95* + $3
S&H ($5 S&H outside of U.S. and Canada).

*SPECIAL INTERNET OFFER - Save $20!! When you order, tell us you saw the
