OBSIDIAN COMES AS A FIVE CD SET YOU MUST USE THIS SOFTWARE ON A COLOR PPC MACINTOSH SYSTEM 7.5 UP TO MAC OS 9.2.2 The software will come as five (5) separate Toast ROM/HFS image files. KEEP THESE TOAST IMAGES LOCKED You might be able to run the 5 cd set as "mounted" images but i doubt it. Drag the images to Toast and burn the cd's. Simple as that. If you do mount the images unlocked - too bad - so sad - you've been warned. Obsidian is perhaps one of the finest 'adventure' genre games ever made. Take the time to read the Obsidian Game Review doc included in this folder. It will give you a good idea about just how good this classic game really is. Please read the following info regarding the Obsidian game: I have personally played this game on several different PPC Macs and have run it successfully on several different Mac systems and OS's I can say that it will play perfectly on the machines outline in the Read Me file below - but the game also plays well (actually better) on newer Mac PPC machines. I have played the game on a Mac 9500 running Mac System 7.6, Blue&White G3 machines, iMac G3 machines and iMac G4 machines. The game would like to see your color setting at 'Thousands of Colors" (16 bit) but if for some reason your machine can only display 24 bit (millions of colors) graphics then the game should be able to play on this setting as well. I have not tried running it in 256 colors but I do not think the game display would be any good at this setting, nor do I know if it can even run at this 256 color setting. The game will run on everything from Mac System 7.5 all the way up to Mac OS 9.2.2 The game obviously is not Mac OSX native so Mac OSX users will need to restart their computers and boot with the full Mac OS 9.2.2 (or 9.2.1) and can then play and enjoy the game. Mac OSX users should not attempt to run this game under the "Classic" emulation mode under OSX. You'll just have to restart under your full OS9 system. Also - the game prefers a 640x480 resolution setting but I have played it fine using 800X600 resolution since the 17 inch screen was too large to be displaying 640X480 (imho). In 14 or 15 inch screens the 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions both work well. Anyways... the game seems to offer no ill effects at running at higher resolutions than 640x480. I have not tested or used the game at 1024x768 so go ahead and be a pioneer and test it out... One last quick bit of info - at anytime within the game you can hit the Escape key on your keyboard to show the game's settings/preferences screen. Hit the escape key again and you return to the game. It is from this screen that you can choose to save a game in progress. it is suggested that you save the game to the "Saved Games" folder within the Obsidian game folder on your hard disk. I have also included in this "docs" folder the following: Obsidian Tips & Hints Obsidian Walkthrough DO NOT READ THESE UNLESS YOU WANT TO SPOIL THE GAME. I suggest you try and play the game through before reading these docs. If you continually get "stuck" or have a problem getting through various parts of the game then perhaps it would be a good idea to take a peek at these docs. But to read these docs before playing the game and then begin your play of the game would (imho) truly spoil the spirit of adventure and discovery within the game since the various tips and cheats, etc would give most of the fun away. Of course some people prefer to read all the cheats and hints and tips previous to playing a game and then pat themselves on the back for a successful journey when they finish the game... gimme a break. ------------------- The contents of the original Read Me file follows: Obsidianª © 1996, 1997 Rocket Science Games, Inc. Welcome! We hope you enjoy your journey through the dream realms of Obsidian. Before starting Obsidian, please look through the manual for important information about playing the game. System Requirements To play Obsidian, you must have an 80Mhz or faster Power Macintosh-compatible computer with a PowerPC 601, 604 or 604e chip or a Performa 6360 or later, a 4X CD-ROM drive, 16 MB of RAM (20 MB recommended), 16-bit (thousands of colors) display, 20 MB free hard disk space, and System software version 7.5 Update 2.0 or later. You must also have QuickTime software installed, (version 2.5 or newer). If you need to install QuickTime software, a QuickTime Installer is provided on OBSIDIAN DISC 1 for your convenience. Preparing to play Obsidian. After installing Obsidian, use the Memory control panel in your System Folder to make sure the Modern Memory Manager is ON. If there is no such setting available (for instance, if you have System 7.6) you can ignore this instruction. Obsidian requires at least 11,500 kilobytes of available RAM (Random Access Memory) to run properly. (The application itself uses 10,000K, and needs an extra 1,500K for other resources.) See how much RAM is available on your computer by going to the Finder and choosing "About This Macintosh..." from the Apple Menu. Your available RAM is the "Largest Unused Block." ¥ If the Largest Unused Block is LESS than 11,500K, see the paragraph on Memory in the "Troubleshooting" section of this Read Me. ¥ If the Largest Unused Block is between 11,499K and 13,000K, and you are experiencing problems, quit Obsidian, restart your computer and try again. ¥ If the Largest Unused Block is AT LEAST than 13,000K, you can improve Obsidian's performance by doing the following: Highlight the Obsidian icon on your hard drive, choose "Get Info..." from the File menu, and set the Minimum size and Preferred size to 2,000K LESS than the Largest Unused Block of RAM. TROUBLESHOOTING Memory If you have less than 11,500K of RAM available, or you cannot launch Obsidian and get a memory error message, or some or all of the screen turns black during gameplay, you probably need to free up more of your computer's memory. To do this... 1. Quit all applications. 2. Open the Memory control panel and set Disk Cache Size to 128K and RAM Disk to OFF. 3. Open the Extensions Manager control panel and disable everything EXCEPT for Apple CD-ROM, QuickTime, QuickTime PowerPlug, Sound, Sound Manager, and Memory. (If you have System 7.6, leave ObjectSupportLib enabled.) You may want to save your current set of extensions before doing so. 4. Shut down and then start up. 5. Turn AppleTalk OFF in the Chooser. 6. If you have System 7.6 or later installed, and still cannot free up 11,500K of RAM, turn Virtual Memory ON, set the memory to 20 MB or more, restart your computer, click once on the Obsidian icon on your hard drive, choose "Get Info..." from the File menu, and set the Minimum size and Preferred size to 2,000K less than the available RAM (Largest Unused Block). CD-ROM Disc Swapping Since Obsidian uses a lot of memory, your Mac may occasionally not be able to read one of the CDs and ask to initialize it or eject it. If this happens, click the on-screen button to eject the CD, reinsert the CD, wait a few seconds for the CD to mount, and click OK again. Gamma Adjustment To best enjoy the stunning visuals in Obsidian, you should optimize the gamma on your monitor. On the Obsidian gamescreen, there is a calibration strip across the center of the screen. Please adjust the brightness/contrast of the monitor so that the box to the extreme left appears pure white, the box to the extreme right appears pure black and each box in between is a different shade of gray. Multitasking Obsidian may experience performance problems if other applications or screensavers are running or heavy network activity occurs during play. Please make sure to quit all other running applications, to disable your screensaver, and to disable your network connection before starting Obsidian. Save/Restore The moment you restore a saved game by choosing it in the System file dialog, you cannot go back to your previous game unless you have saved it as well. Do not save a game with the name "Obsidian", "Obsidian Data 0" or "Obsidian Data 1" or restore any file not saved from within the game. Music and Sound Effects Volumes You can adjust the volumes of MIDI music and all other sound independently on the Obsidian gamescreen. Helpful hint If at any time you cannot get an active (non-red) cursor on the screen and you have waited a few seconds for the screen to update, press the ESC key to go to the game screen, and press it again to return to the game.
