This program is a freeware, so I can only spend limited time to support your troubles. Please keep this in mind. 1. Introduction [omitted] 2. How to Install (1) Install KanjiTalk 6.0.7 to your Hard Disk. Consult KanjiTalk Install Manual for installation. If you don't mind overwriting KanjiTalk 6.0.7 that you already using, you can omit this step. But remove INITs from your system folder, since many of them are incompatible with System 7.0. ###(If you have Quadras or new Macintoshes which require KanjiTalk 6.0.7.1, and still you only have KanjiTalk 6.0.7, please follow the instructions (a) ~ (d) below.) (a) Copy "system folder", from "system disk" disk or "system-kidouyou" disk of your KanjiTalk installation kit. (b) If you already have U.S system folder on your hard disk, that folder should have small system icon on it. If so, drag out Finder to another folder. After that, small system icon will disappear from that folder. (c) Open "system folder" which you copied from KanjiTalk installation kit, then close it again. After that, this Japanese "system folder" will have small system icon on it. (d) Follow step (2) described below. ʁ@ Fig 1. Japanese "system folder" with small system icon (2) Restart with System 7.0 Installer floppy disk, and overwrite System 7.0 (English) on KanjiTalk 6.0.7. And restart the machine again with overwritten KanjiTalk 6.0.7. It is necessary to update desktop information and such. (3) After the installation, and when you restart, you will see this message. ʁ@ Fig 2. The message "KanjiTalk is not compatible...." Ignore this message, since the installation of LaunchScript solves this problem. (4) Move preLanchScript to Extensions folder in System folder. For Quadras, move KTon68040 to Extensions folder, too. (5) Move LanchScript to Control Panels folder in System folder. (6) Move your FEP (such as VJE, EG Bridge, or 2.1 Henkan) and Gaiji-Touroku from Control Panels folder up to System folder. It is necessary to let KanjiTalk recognize these files. Then restart. It takes a while, since GomTalk patches resources to System and Finder. (7) After the restart, change "Font for views" to Osaka in "View" in the Control Panels. You can decipher the file name on the desktop. ʁ@ Fig 3. An example of the contents of System Folder after the installation (9) If you have Quadras or new Macintoshes that require KanjiTalk 6.0.7.1, and still you only have KanjiTalk 6.0.7, please refer additional instructions (a) ~ (b) below.) (a) You can install Sai-minchou or Cyu-gothic by KanjiTalk 6.0.7 installer. First, double click "installer" of your KanjiTalk installer disk. Then choose "customize", and the dialog like below shows up. Here, choose Sai-minchou / Cyu-gothic, then install. (ATM-J could be installed by the similar way. But, if you install to Quadras, make sure that Cache is off.) (b) Copy Gaiji Touroku, and 2.1 Henkan to system folder. ʁ@ Fig 6. The dialog of "customizes" 3. Version up from v1.1 to v1.2 If you already installed v1.1 of GomTalk, you only need to replace preLaunchScript and LaunchScript to new ones. 4. Control Panel Settings You will see a control panel by double-clicking LaunchScript icon. You can set following settings by this control panel. (1) Settings of System Font You can change the display font on the menu bar and dialogs. Restart after you change the settings, since you may encounter cosmetic problems with font display. (2) Settings of Application Font You can change application font. (3) Settings of Alias Style You can change the font style of alias. The default is Italic. (4) Settings for font of Balloon Help. (5) Keyboard Settings at Start Up You can set the keyboard settings at start up to English keyboard or Japanese keyboard. (6) Date format. (7) Number format. (Short format for date. Japanese is 91/10/6, and English is 10/6/91) ʁ@ Fig 9. LaunchScript Control Panel 5. Known Problems o If you drag the window when the balloon help is on, the updating of the window will have a problem. o Some applications have problems to open items in Apple Menu Item. This problem seems to be caused by the application that was compiled a version of MPW (probably before 3.0). 6. Tips o If you press option + E upon start up, the English system will start up. There LaunchScript gives an extra alert, but you can ignore it. o If you see X on LaunchScript Icon at start up, it means that the install of KanjiTalk is failed. o Switch of "Romaji" and "Kana" The switch menu will appear if you click the flag on the menu bar. You can switch "Romaji" from/to "Kana" here, but this setting will be back to the default at the next start up. If you want to change the default settings, you need to switch using Keyboard control panel. o The order of loading of INITs The order must be preLaunchScript -> KanjiTalk -> LaunchScript. o INITs for Japanese script INITs for Japanese script must be loaded after LaunchScript. You can let LaunchScript load first, by changing the name to ALaunchScript. o Don't change the name of "KanjiTalk" and "Control Panels". If changed, preLaunchScript can not recognize them. 7. Changes v1.2 (omitted) 8. Development Environments Machine : Macintosh IIci (RAM 8MB, HD Apple 80MB) Monitor : Apple 13' color Compiler : THINK C v4.05 9. Prolog I am very surprised of the responses of this project that I started from my personal motivation to use Japanese on System 7.0. I think v1.2 makes installation process much easier. This is the final version of GomTalk, but further bug fix versions might be released. I am sorry, since I could not reply all the mails I received. And many thanks to the netters on Nikkei Mix and Nifty for helping the development of GomTalk. I received the way to patch to Finder from an anonymous user of GomTalk. Thank you very much to finding this patch. 10.
