GEAR for MacªOS Version 3.3.1 IMPORTANT NOTE Please make sure to read this ÔGEAR Read MeÕ file for additional information regarding last minute changes in the program, that are not included in the manual. Users of older Gear versions, READ THIS Please make sure to remove all GEAR versions prior to v3.3.1 from your system. The ÔGEAR PreferencesÕ file in the SystemsÕ Preferences folder will be replaced. Any changes to the preferences of older GEAR versions have to be set again in GEAR for MacªOS v3.3.1. Make sure you have removed older applications and images before installing this version of GEAR for MacªOS. INSTALLATION The Installer application, ÔGEAR InstallerÕ will install the GEAR application into a folder called ÔGEAR for MacªOSÕ and a new ÔGEAR PreferencesÕ file and ÔGEAR CDR ConfigÕ file on the hard disk of your Macintoshª. It will do nothing to any of your disks on your computer other than install software in various locations. GEAR COMPANIONª FILES The GEAR Companionª files can be used to produce artwork for the CD label and jewel box. The files can be installed separately with the ÔCustomÕ install option and consist of three sets of files in three different file formats: ÔAI3Õ for Adobe Illustratorª 3.x, ÔAI5Õ for Adobe Illustratorª 5.x and ÔFHÕ for Altsys/Macromedia Freehandª 4.x and 5.x. Both Adobe Illustratorª type files are saved in EPS-format, so you can import the layouts in Desktop Publishing programs, like any version of Quark XPressª or Aldus/Adobe PageMakerª. More information about the Companionª can be find in the ÔCompanionª Read MeÕ installed in the Companion folder with the files. GEAR FOR MACªOS HISTORY INFORMATION v3.0 - September 1995 This is the first release version of GEAR 3.0 for MacªOS. There is no additional information regarding changes to the program that are not covered by the manual. Known bugs: - Pressing return in the 'append next session' dialog may cause GEAR to quit. - (PowerMacs only): Copy CD Track (accessed from both the workbench and the option menu) will cause the system to hang. v3.0.1 - October 1995 This version includes the following fixes and new features: - Improved 4x speed recording performance. - Copy CD Track bug in Power Mac versions removed. Clicking the workbench icon or choosing the menu item caused Gear to crash. - The asynchronous SCSI Manager is invoked whenever more than one physical SCSI controller is used. - Adjusted maximum recordable HFS CD-ROM size. - Solved all tape related bugs. - Return and Enter keys both work now in the Append session dialog. - HP C4324/4325 recorder support added. - Kodak CDR-240 recorder support added. - Yamaha CDR102 recorder support added. v3.1 - April 1996 The following new features have been added to GEAR: - Support for the following new recorders: MITSUMI CDR2200 MATSUSHITA CW-7501 (PANASONIC) RICOH 1420 JVC 2010 PINNACLE 5020/5040 - GEAR now has an option to set the reading speed of a recorder. This option can be set in the Recording Setup dialog. - GEAR now supports a directory nesting level up to 24 levels (was 12 levels). This option can be set in the CD-Generator setup dialog. - GEAR now supports file name lengths up to 64 characters (was 37 characters) in case you decide not to translate file names to ISO compatible names. This option can be set in the CD-Generator setup dialog. - It is possible to use Disc At Once writing when using the following recorders. This option can be set in the Recording Setup dialog. Reported Bugs/Problems - The software fails to write ('end of medium reached') sometimes. This is caused if one writes a multi-session CD-R to some recorders (Yamaha CDR100!). These recorders do not comply to the Orange Book with respect to the multi-session overhead size. A workaround will be available in future releases. - When making an ISO or XA image, the source folder may not contain too much files/folders (list is limited to 32000 bytes) OTHER PLATFORMS Gear is available for different computer platforms.
