Searching the Tech Info Library (TIL)

The enclosed TIL is downloaded directly from the web-based TIL and is indexed for use by the Apple Help Viewer.  For that reason you will need Mac OS 8.6 or later to search for and read any of the 15,000 technical articles included on the Companion CD.

Important: The web-based TIL is updated daily.  For your convenience, every article in the CD TIL includes a direct link to the web-based version of the same article.

You must install some files on your hard drive in order to use the version of the TIL on this CD.

CD installation

This installation places the minimal amount of files on your hard disk (approximately 10 MB) and requires the Companion CD to be mounted in order to search the TIL.

1. Launch the "Install CD TIL" application, which will copy the TIL index, TIL start page, and an alias to the TIL files on the CD into a new folder named "Tech Info Library" located in the Help folder in the System Folder.
2. To use the TIL, make sure the Companion CD is mounted, then select Help Center from the Help menu.

Full installation

This installation places the entire TIL on your hard disk (approximately 160 MB) and does not require the Companion CD to be mounted in order to search the TIL.

1. Launch the "Install Full TIL" application, which will copy the TIL index, TIL start page, and a folder containing all the TIL files on the CD into a new folder named "Tech Info Library" located in the Help folder in the System Folder.
2. To use the TIL, select Help Center from the Help menu. Once the TIL files are installed on your computer, you no longer need the Companion CD.

Important: After installation, you will have either a folder named "tilfiles" or an alias to "tilfiles" in the Tech Info Library folder in the Help folder in the System Folder. Do not open this folder; it contains more than 15,000 items and the Finder may not be able to list the contents.
