Classic Menu 2.8.1 by Sig Software Introduction Classic Menu brings the classic Mac OS apple menu back to Mac OS X, replacing the system's built-in apple menu (but keeping it within easy reach). It also lets you customize the ordering of the menu items and include separators. Requirements • An Apple Macintosh or other MacOS-compatible. • Mac OS X 10.4 or later. License Classic Menu is freely distributed as trial software. You are permitted to evaluate it before discarding it, or purchasing a license. The unlicensed version is fully functional but occasionally displays a reminder to purchase a license. Classic Menu costs just $10 per license. Licenses can be purchased online at Sig Software's online ordering page: http://order.kagi.com/?BX Getting Started When Classic Menu is launched, the appearance of the apple menu icon will change. The system's apple menu can be accessed by control-clicking the apple icon. You can change how to access the system menu in the preferences. The new apple menu lists the contents of the Classic Menu Items folder in the Preferences folder of your user's Library folder, which is created containing a few initial items. Items can be added to this folder by dragging files from the Finder onto the apple icon or using the commands explained below. They are displayed in alphabetical order by default but can be reordered (see below). To open a file or folder, select it from the hierarchical apple menu. To reveal an item in the Finder, select it while holding down the Command key. To show the information window for an item in the Finder, select it while holding down the Shift key. Ordering and Separators New in version 2.8, Classic Menu lets you customize the ordering of the items in the apple menu, and add separators. This works by using prefixes on the file and folder names inside the Classic Menu Items folder. Each prefix is followed by a >> (double right angle bracket). Classic Menu sorts the items according to the prefix, and any items with the same prefix are ordered alphabetically. This enables you to group items and control the ordering precisely. You can also include a separator in the menu by creating an empty folder in Classic Menu Items whose name is the appropriate prefix followed by a single hyphen (-). Here is an example of how to name the items in the Classic Menu Items folder to create groups: A>>Documents B>>- B>>Accounts B>>Invoices B>>Legal C>>- C>>Applications C>>Office Apps C>>Utilities Here is another example using numerical prefixes to set the ordering exactly: 01>>Documents 02>>- 03>>Legal 04>>Accounts 05>>Invoices 06>>- 07>>Office Apps 08>>Applications 09>>Utilities For numerical prefixes, make sure you always use the same number of digits, padding with zeroes if necessary. Other Menu Items In the Classic Menu, the Menu Folder submenu contains: • Add Alias… lets you select an file or folder to be added to the menu. • Open in Finder opens the Classic Menu Items folder in the Finder. • Select New… lets you change the folder whose items are listed in the Classic Menu, instead of Classic Menu Items. The Classic Menu submenu contains: • About… displays version information. • Preferences… accesses program settings. • Register… displays usage and allows purchase of a license code. • Quit stops Classic Menu running and returns your apple menu to normal. Tip: to share apple menu items between the Classic environment and the rest of OS X, choose Select New… from the Menu Folder submenu, then select the Apple Menu Items folder inside the System Folder used for your Classic environment.
