Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by the Swedish video game developer Mojang Studios. The game was created by Markus "Notch" Persson in the Java programming language. Following several early private testing versions, it was first made public in May 2009 before fully releasing in November 2011, with Jens Bergensten then taking over development. Minecraft has since been ported to several other platforms and is the best-selling video game of all time, with over 200 million copies sold and over 140 million monthly active users as of 2021.

In Minecraft, players explore a blocky, procedurally-generated 3D world with virtually infinite terrain, and may discover and extract raw materials, craft tools and items, and build structures or earthworks. Depending on game mode, players can fight computer-controlled mobs, as well as cooperate with or compete against other players in the same world. Game modes include a survival mode, in which players must acquire resources to build the world and maintain health, and a creative mode, where players have unlimited resources and access to flight. Players can modify the game to create new gameplay mechanics, items, and assets.

Minecraft has been critically acclaimed, winning several awards and being cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. Social media, parodies, adaptations, merchandise, and the annual Minecon conventions played large roles in popularizing the game. The game has also been used in educational environments to teach chemistry, computer-aided design, and computer science. In 2014, Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property were purchased by Microsoft for US$2.5 billion. A number of spin-off games have also been produced, such as Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Dungeons, and Minecraft Earth. — Wikipedia

Foreword by z970:

As of version 1.6, Minecraft no longer supports computers running anything earlier than Java 6 (including PowerPC Macs) as Minecraft 1.6 uses a new launcher that isn't compatible with older Java APIs.

You could still buy & play Minecraft on machines with the older launcher, regardless of being discontinued. However, shortly after the Microsoft buyout, Mojang (Microsoft) decided to drop support for the older launcher, rendering it unable to login to Mojang's Minecraft servers, thus arbitrarily locking you out of the game.

Therefore, Minecraft PowerPC Edition (and ClassiCube-PPC) is our response. Please enjoy!

PS: Hi, Sean!

Addition by mueller_minki:

Due to growing request, I made a working version of Minecraft 1.2.5 for PPC (and x86 and ARM) machines running Linux. It has the same optimisations as the OS X version but due to the lower system requirements, it should be able to get a playable superflat experience on late G3 systems, as long as there is more than 256 mb ram available.

For the best experience on PPC machines, please use IBM Java 6 (last release with JIT for PPC).

To install it, simply download https://archive.org/download/ibm-j2sdk1.6_1.6.0_powerpc_202109/ibm-j2sdk... and run the following command inside the directory you downloaded it to:

sudo dpkg -i ./ibm-j2sdk1.6_1.6.0_powerpc.deb && sudo apt install -f

List of (currently known) supported devices:

· PowerPC and Intel Macs
· 32 and 64-bit PCs
· Raspberry Pi 2, 3, and 4
· Xbox 360
· Sony PlayStation 2 and 3 (if you can live with major lag spikes)

Please note: Macintosh Garden tends to rename tar.gz files to tar_.gz so make sure to change it back to tar.gz before running tar xf /path/to/tar.gz

For PPC machines that are running multiple instances of Java or have trouble detecting the installed ibm java, please edit MinecraftG4Launcher.sh and change the path in line 36 to /usr/lib/j2sdk1.6-ibm/bin/java
