You see a grizzled, Dwarvish man who is covered in dirt and smells like moldy potatoes. He looks a bit surprised to see you. <pb>"Well, hello there! I've never seen you before, so that must mean you are new to Rockhammer, yes? My name is Morwen, and I am the General Manager of the Rockhammer Mine. What brings you to this far-off place?"

"This might sound strange, but I think I was teleported here. I remember a flash of light, and then I awoke atop the nearby volcano."
Morwen looks at you with an expression of disbelief. "Teleported, you say? Hmm, perhaps you've been hitting the malted ale too hard! Sometimes that 'appins with me- I starts to drinkin' and never know wheres I might wake up!". He chuckles heartily, but then notices you are not participating in his humor. "Well okay then, what you're sayin' is a bit outside my area of expertise. I would advise you to speak with Arima, our resident gemologist. She dabbles a bit in that magickal hocus pocus stuff- perhaps she can help you understand how you got 'teleported' here." <pb>"Please feel free to stay in Rockhammer while you get your bearings. Spend the gold in your pocket; we always have jobs that you can do to earn a bit more!", he says as he flashes you a wink.

"Can you tell me where Rockhammer is located?"
"Are you playing with me? You mean to say you do not even know where in this world you are? My friend, you are in the Wylderan Province, near Weeping Mountain in the south parish. This is not the type of place you just wander in to. We're surrounded by swamp and forest and all sorts of wild things; you definitely would have remembered passing through all of that to get here." <pb>Morwen shakes his head. "I guess you were not lyin' about bein' teleported here, so listen up: don't go wanderin' off into the wilds until you are prepared and well supplied. The insects are menacing enough on their own, and if you survive those the bandits and buccaneers will happily cut your throat for the few gold coins in your pocket. Do you understand?"

"Is there no other city in all of Wylderan?"
"Well, there is Moonrise of course. Ever 'eard of it? It is a port city, perhaps two days walk northwest. Officially, it is not part of Wylderan since it is on an island claimed by the Province of Thaermore. It's never been a pleasant place, but after the fall of Thaermore it has become self-governed by a bunch of buccaneers, black-market traders and outlaws. You really don't want to go there. Other than Moonrise, you might find a caravan or two roaming the wilds, but that's about it."

"<en>, a man I came upon told me that he saw Goblins coming ashore to the east."
"Goblins? Eh, they're probably here to try to buy some Dwarvish Mellowleaf. They come around a couple times a year. I've told my crew to not sell any Mellowleaf to them- they're like stray dogs. If you feed them once, they're gonna come back for more, and I don't want Goblins loitering in these parts and robbin' good folk of their gold." <pb>"If I see any in Rockhammer, I'll lop off their ears and send them home yelping!"

"The man I talked to blew the pass shut to prevent an invasion."
"He did what?! What in damnation was he thinking? There ain't no invasion coming this way, but the closed pass would explain why the late summer caravan hasn't arrived yet." <pb>"Thanks for telling me this. Now I've got even more work to get scheduled. After the current shift ends later this week, I'll send an engineer up to the pass and investigate it. We'll figure out how to get it open but it's going to take some time."

"What is this place you call Rockhammer?"
"Rockhammer is a mining operation, owned by my uncle, Lord Dagonboom. I am the General Manager of the mine, which makes me the highest authority in this lil' spit of a town. This place is the closest thing you'll find to real civilization in all of southern Wylderan. Our mine mostly produces gold and silver, though there is a high concentration of Candecium in these rocks beneath Weeping Mountain, and we'll take that as well when we strike a pocket." <pb>"Since we are a fairly remote operation, we certainly welcome the occasional traveler passin' through. Spend the gold in your pocket at the tavern and trade with our merchants. If you're lookin' for work, just ask around. But don't go snoopin' in the mine itself. That's private property."

"Candecium? What do you know of it?"
"Candecium is a type of crystal. We mostly find just tiny pockets of it, consisting of grains barely bigger than sand, but we occasionally find small stones as well. A quarter-carat is the biggest crystal I've ever seen. Supposedly the Dwarf Lord of Durnore had an enormous Candecium crystal called the 'Crux of Fire' which he kept locked away deep in his mine. My uncle told me it was stolen a short while back, which is quite amusing to us Dagenbooms. We have never been on very good terms with the Brumbeltons." <pb>"Anyway, I don't know much about the crystal myself, I only know that some folks value it, so it is worth our effort to take it when we find it."

"Stolen, you say? That is interesting."
Morwen laughs soundly. "Yes, quite. If the rumor is true, it must have set old Brumbeltons beard on fire with rage when he discovered it missing...must have been a master thief too, for I know his mine would have been well guarded." <pb>"As I already said, I am not very knowledgeable in Candecium. I've been told it has magickal properties, which is of little use to us Dwarves but of some value to others. If you have any more questions, go talk to Arima. She can tell you more about Candecium, and she might have a bit that you could purchase if you want."

"What news have you heard from the surrounding area?"
"News? Funny you should ask, because I was about to inquire the same from you! News is slow to make its way here to Rockhammer, so we usually rely on outsiders like you to fill us in on the latest rumors." <pb><en> tugs on the wiry tuft of hair hanging from his chin. "Let me think... the last thing I heard was that the war had moved north from Thaermore into Mistfell. A few of the smaller towns had fallen, but Port Kuudad was holding strong as of three months ago. The Dwarven Alliance has closed off all entry into the Northern Expanse, and I can guarantee you nothin' will get through a Dwarven blockade!"

"What is the Dwarven Alliance?"
"There are three main Dwarf clans of the Northern Expanse: the Dagenbooms, the Brumbeltons and the Graerstones. We keep to ourselves for the most part. Centuries of quarrels over mining rights and family disputes have left each clan bitter about one another. However, in light of the war rising from the south, the three clans have aligned together to form a Dwarven defensive brigade powerful enough to stop any invasion into the North Lands." <pb>"Oh, believe me Longtall: if the Goblins and Taurax want to meet us Dwarves on the battlefield, we will deliver a bloodbath upon them unmatched in the annals of Eschalon! I only hope that when the time comes, I will be able to stand beside my brethren with axe in hand."

"I need to earn some coin. What jobs have you for me?"
"Well, I do have a job that no one here seems interested in. Have you seen all these damn Bog Roaches crawling around these parts? Well, down in the mine itself, it appears a Matron has built a nest inside the winch control room. As new roaches hatch from the egg, they often get stuck in the winch gears, which gum up the mechanism needed for pulling the carts up from the deep mine." <pb>"Why don't you go down and see if you can take care of that old Matron roach, and destroy all of her offspring, then come back to see me. Oh, and don't forget to destroy the eggs as well."

"Well, well! So it appears you have. I just got word from the mine foreman that the roaches are cleared out. Thank you, now we can begin cleaning up the mess and getting our ore carts working again. Here is 100 gold for services rendered."
