You see a Dwarven miner looking over a long parchment upon which have been scribed numbers and marks, most likely a daily record of the mine's output. He sees that you have entered his office, and quickly folds the parchment up. <pb>"Er, what business do you have with me, Longtall? Do you have an appointment?" he asks as he pulls a small calendar book from his coat pocket and leafs through the pages.

"I am exploring this mine. Can you tell me about it?"
"What in damnation did you just say? Exploring? Longtall, you are in the wrong place. This mine is privately owned. It is not open to visitors, and it is most certainly not open to explorers and treasure-seekers." <pb>"You look harmless, so I am going to let you off with just a warning. Follow the signs to the exit of the mine, and leave this place. If I catch you snooping around, I'm gonna take my hammer and break both your kneecaps. Do you understand what I am saying?"

"Morwen hired me to clean up the roach problem."
"Oh yes, he sent word that he has hired another exterminator. The last one didn't...well, he never finished the job. Anyway, you need to head back north of here to the Winch Room. That's where the problem is at. When you finish the job, go see him, not me." <pb>"Now go on, leave me be. I've got my work to do, and you've got yours."

"Leisle, the tavern owner, sent me to collect your bar tab."
"Leisle sent you all the way down here to collect on a tiny bar tab? Longtall, do you see what I've got going on here? The mine has come to a halt since the ore carts became disabled. Those damn roaches jammed up all the gears and it will take weeks to get everything running again. On top of that, someone on my mining crew thought he could clear up the roach problem by bringing in cave scorpions. The only thing that 'brilliant' idea accomplished is now we've got a well-fed overpopulation of cave scorpions living in the southeast section of the mine." <pb>Just then a subtle smile creeps upon Logi's face as if he was struck by a brilliant idea. "I'll tell you what I'll do. I will give you the balance of my bar tab if you go kill all the cave scorpions. Then you can take that gold to Leisle and she will give you your cut for collecting it. This way, we all benefit. What say you?"

"I believe you've made yourself clear."
"Good. I'm far more lenient than the Dwarves you will find deeper in the mine. They work long hours for the ore they dig out- if they catch you wandering around down there, they won't bother to ask you what you are doing. They will assume you are there to steal from them, and they make sure you do not leave this place alive."

"I have killed all the scorpions I could find."
"Well, you haven't found all of them. Can't you hear them? I can. Go search the tunnels a bit more, there is at least one more scorpion alive out there, maybe more."

"That sounds like an acceptable deal."
"Alright then, we've got ourselves an agreement!" <pb>"Now, let me tell you, this task is not for some tenderfoot novice with delusions of being a warrior. These Cave Scorpions are more aggressive than those roaches. Their armor is thicker and they will be harder to kill. They also have a poisonous sting, so if you find yourself outnumbered and inflicted, that will likely be the end of your story. Oh, and to make matters worse, we've laid all sorts of traps in the tunnels trying to kill them, so you better keep a sharp eye out for those." <pb>"Now that I've given you proper warning, I am not liable for any misfortune that befalls you. In any case, it will be nice to get these pests taken care of- this whole damn place is locked down until I can make it safe again."

"No way. I'm here to collect your bar tab, not work for you."
"Well, I don't have enough gold to pay off my tab right now. I told you the mine has been shut down for weeks, and if the mine is shut down then nobody gets paid. Go back and tell Leisle that she is going to have to wait for her gold too." <pb>Logi barks in a threatening voice: "Begone!"

"The tunnels are devoid of any scorpion activity."
"Ah yes, and so they are. It is quiet again. I was beginning to go insane hearing that damn chatter. Well, a deal's a deal- here is enough gold to cover my bar tab with Leisle. Now run off and finish your business with her."
