You see an oddly familiar man who is clearly drunk, singing a sea shanty while taking swigs from a jug of rum. When he sees you, he stops in mid verse and exclaims: "Hey...don't I know you from somewhere?"

"I really do think I know you. I think I do. That is, I thought I did. Did I?"

"I don't believe we've ever met."
"I don't know, I am pretty good with faces when I get a good look at 'em. Well anyway I don't recognize my own face sometimes, but I am great with others!" <pb>The man suddenly snaps to attention. "Oh, where are my manners? I am Captain Gregores Morgan, formally of the Darkford Guard and now serving pridefully, er, proudly as the leader of the Eschalon Maritime First Alert Corps."

"What are you doing here?"
"Ah, I have the most important duty of all! I am protecting Eschalon from invaders! That's what I am doing..." Captain Morgan zones out for a moment, swaying back and forth like he might fall over. "I protect Eschalon is what I meant to say...that's right. For example, if I see any suspicious ships pass by this beach, I light the torches and alert the mainland so that they are aware."

"Aware of what?"
"Of the suspicious ship of course! That is my duty as captain, to be a vigilant. Just last week I alerted the mainland of two fishing boats that might have been hauling illegal spice."

"Might have?"
"Yeah, that's right. If we don't stop the illegal flow of spice into Eschalon, who will?"

"I wasnt aware that spices were illegal? What province enforces that law?"
Captain Morgan just stares at you for a moment as if he can't believe you don't know what he is talking about. "They all do, I think. Anyway, it's not just spice smugglers that I report. If I see a pirate ship, I'll signal the mainland of that kind of ship as well."

"Wait...this 'Maritime First Alert Corps'...is this something you made up?"
"No, I didn't make it up! That's crazy. I formed the service corps because there was a need for someone to alert the mainland of all the suspicious activity. That's why I made this up. We, that is I, am always looking for new recruits. If you have what it takes to be a member of the First Alert Corps you should sign up. There are new recruit positions available and I have time to interview you right now, if you are interested."

"Under any other circumstance, I'd be happy to try out for the corps. Unfortunately, I must really be on my way."
"That's probably for the best. Nine out of ten recruits don't have it in them to be in the corps anyway." Captain Morgan takes another swig of rum. "I say you should try again tomorrow. Maybe you'll pass the test then. You were just unlucky today." <pb>The drunken man staggers away, turning briefly to gaze out to the sea before sitting down near his fire.
