A band of polygons is inserted in the mesh, encircling the selected portion(s). By default, these new polygons are assigned a new Polygroup color. This provides new geometry to the mesh in a way that's organic -- it follows lines already existing in a mesh, like rings of a tree following the 'grain' of the wood.

Before pressing the \C020202Edge Loop\C484848 button, you can insert polygons in selected areas around the visible mesh's edge. To do this, move edge points to new positions, and the \C020202Edge Loop\C484848 button bridges only these gaps with new polygons (instead of inserting an entire loop).
