/*title_start*/Live vs. Baked Materials/*title_end*/
/*text_start*/ZBrush's materials remain 'live' on the canvas at all times. This enables you to complete your scene and later adjust, or even replace, the materials as necessary while setting up the lighting and render modifiers. Whenever a material is modified or replaced, any instances of that material on the canvas are updated with the new properties.

This enables you to build a scene using variations of the \C020202Fast Shader\C484848 material, which renders very quickly, and later replace these variations with more complex materials.

\C020202Baking\C484848 provides a way to hold fast the material properties of a scene. It converts all materials on a layer to the \C020202Flat Color\C484848 material, retaining all shaded colors generated by the material and lighting properties. After baking, properties of a material can be changed without affecting the canvas.
