Bard's Tale III - Thief of Fate
                              Code Wheel

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This one of the hardest parts of the manual for Bard's Tale III. That's
why it wasn't with the other docs going around. I'm going to give you

do it. I think this was Electronic Arts way of slowing pirating of the game,
because it is one of their first unprotected games.

[From the original manual]

Code Wheel
The code wheel gives you a numeric code that lets you transport from the
wilderness to the dimensions. When you're in the right location and cast the
right teleport spell, you will see four words. Locate the first word on the
edge of the inner wheel, the second on the middle wheel, the third word on the
outer wheel, and then line them up. Once their lined up, look for the fourth
word in the center of the inner wheel.  Above it you will see a numeric code;
enter this code to transport to the new dimension.

[How to make the wheel]

You will need three pieces of cardboard, ruler, pen (pencil), scissors, a
compass (or something to make circles), and exacto knife (or something
similiar).

NOTE: Be as exact as possible with the following instructions, the more time
you

take and the better you do it... the easier it will be to read. If you have
Hackers Association. (Number at the end of this file.)

Cut out three circles from the cardboard. The first should be 6 inches in
diameter. Second: 6 and 3/4 inches. Third: 7 and 1/2 inches. Now with the
knife make a whole in the center of each wheel (The same size, and as close to
the center as possible). Now make a smaller circle with a pen on each wheel.
The circle should be 7/16 of an inch in from the edge of each wheel.

Seperate each outside (7/16 of an inch) ring into 16 parts by drawing small
lines evenly spaced along the ring. Here's a diagram of what we have so far.

                                    ____
                                   / __ \
                                  / / \ \
                                 / / \ \
                                ( ( ) )
                                 \ \ / /
                                  \ \__/ /
                                   \____/

Assume this is the rounded edge of a wheel. This 'ring' countinues all the way
around the circle and is 7/16 of an inch thick. Now divide the ring up in to
16

pieces
                                    ____
In case any one is counting /|__|\
  those --->, I know there are    /|/  \|\
only 12 spaces. So use your /|/ \|\
  imagination. Also imagine ( ( ) )
  that those short lines (|) \|\ /|/
go directly from the inner \|\__/|/
circle to the edge of the wheel. \|__|/

Ok. Now that you've finished that I'm going to give you a list of 16 words for
each circle. Put the first in any one of the spaces on the ring and then the
other words in their own space going clockwise. Also make a mark above the
first word of each wheel for reference later.

First wheel: Second Wheel: Third Wheel:
------------ ------------- ------------
Werra Ice Keep Urmech
Tarjan Shadow Canyon Tslotha
Skara Brae Tar Quarry Cyanis
UnterBrae Cold Peak The Old Man
Arboria Crystal Spring Hawkslayer

Lucencia Shadow Rock Bard's Hall
Kinestia Sulphur Springs Stagger Inn
Tenebrosia Warriors Vale Hic Haven
Tarmitia Ciera Brannia Violet Mountain
Malefia Celaria Bree Crystal Palace
Valarian Black Scar Catacombs
Lanatir Dark Copse Tunnels
Alliria Nowhere Workshop
Ferofist Festering Pit Wizard's Guild
Sceadu Sacred Grove Brilhasti

Take the first wheel and put it on some thick cardboard or wood, you are going
to cut some holes in it with the knife. Write the following words below the
hole. All the holes are rectangles of different sizes, but all have a width of
1/4 inch. They run parrallel to the word on the first wheel that I give you.

Shadow Door: 1/4 (or less) inch below Werra. A little less then an inch long.

Smokey Lens: 5/8 inch under Sceadu. 3/4 of an inch long.

Black Lens: 1 inch under Werra. 1/2 inch long.

Shadow Lock: 1 and 1/2 inches under Tarjan. 3/8 inch long.

Nightspear: 1/2 inch under Skara Brae. 3/4 inch long.

Wineskin: 7/8 inch under Skara Brae. 5/8 inch long.

Hammer of Wrath: 1 and 5/16 inches under UnterBrae. 1/2 inch long.

Wand of Power: 1/16 of an inch under UnterBrae. 1 inch long.

Acorns: 3/4 inches under Malefia. 3/4 inches long.

Arefolia: 1 and 1/2 inch under Malefia. 3/8 inch long.

Crystal Key: 1/16 inch under Valarian. 1 inch long.

Arrows of Life: 1 and 1/16 inches under Valarian. 1/2 inch long.

Crown of Truth: 1/2 inch under Lanatir. 3/4 inches long.

Rainbow Rose: 7/8 inches under Alliria. 5/8 inch long.

Strifespear: 1 and 1/4 inches under Alliria. 1/2 inch long.

Crystal Lens: 1/4 inch under Ferofist. 1 inch long.

Next (this is optional), in the space of the first wheel without any holes, put
a title... something like: The Bard's Tale III Which is what the
The Thief of Fate Original has.

And now the numbers. Find the space with the dot on the second wheel.

NOTE: I would suggest typing these numbers up on address labels, then sticking
them on.

A little more then a half an inch in and seperated by 1/8 of an inch, enter the
following columns of numbers. These numbers will begin at the inner circle and
work their way toward the center of the wheel. Try to keep them as centered as
possible and put each column clockwise around the wheel. One more thing, when
you see a [] in the list for a number. Make a hole there like you did on the
first wheel. 1/4 inch thick, 1 inch long.

Allright. The third wheel (the largest) should be done the same way. Except
the columns of numbers should start 7/8 inch in from the inner circle.

That's it. Just a few final steps to put it all together. Place the largest
wheel on the bottom, the second wheel on top of it, and the third (smallest)
wheel on top of that. Make sure all the wheels have their writing facing up.
Then line up the holes in the center and stick something through the holes to
keep them together, but allow them to spin. Your code wheel is now completed,
good luck.
